International Year of Forests

The United Nations has declared 2011 to be the year of the forests and Zotter Chocolate UK has produced the Ein Waldstück (Piece of Forest) bar as their contribution.

They will plant one tree in the rainforest for each bar sold and so far, they have already planted 81,477 trees, and they are still going! The project is directed by WWF and they plan to create an extensive habitat for the endangered tiger in the Xe Pian region of Laos.

Fairtrade

In this hub I talk about Josef Zotter and his chocolate products and I am using that as an excuse to mention Fairtrade. Zotter has been a permanent license holder of Fairtrade Austria for many years and the raw materials he uses, such as cacao and cane sugar, are both organic and Fairtrade. As I come from Peru and lived many years in the Dominican Rep, both sugar and cacao producing countries, I find it meaningful that he should follow Fairtrade.

As a cacao processing company, Zotter carries the responsibility for the living and working conditions of cocoa farmers in the developing world and Fairtrade is creating opportunities for them by enabling them to emancipate themselves from fluctuating world market prices and establish their own self-determined existence, where there is no child labour and environmental exploitation is non existent.

Zotter Chocolate UK will also be supporting John Lewis in the Fairtrade Fornight event, which will be held in the Food Hall in Oxford Street, London, on Friday 4th March and people are asked to show their support by attending.

Ingredients and wrappings

Each one of the Zotter chocolates is wrapped in what amounts to a piece of enchanting, creative art, as they are designed by artist Andreas H. Gratze, a friend of Zotter.

Zotter also uses original and daring combinations of ingredients, like olives and lemon, for example. The two are not daring in themselves, but one has never heard of olives being combined with chocolate, of all things!

He also likes to use traditional fruits, like cherries, bananas, raspberries, strawberries and grapes, but also dried fruit, like raisins and coconut; as well as the whole assortment of nuts (hazelnuts, almonds) and alcohol (muscat, grappa, rum)

He also raids his collection of spices and uses pimento, cinnamon, vanilla, mint, peppermint, ginger, turmeric and even chilli.

Among his ingredients are also to be found grains and even flower petals!

Fair trade chocolate for children

Zotter even has a children's program (organized by age) to celebrate kids birthdays, where children will be able to visit the edible garden, where they will be able to meet some of their animal friends, like cows, sheep and even giraffe! Children will also be able to visit the galerie and watch some interesting videos.
