Why did the batter fall of when dipping things into the Fondue pot?


A lady I know from Facebook had tried Fondue before and tried it with "shrimp and veggies, tempura". She said the batter would fall off as soon as she dipped it into the pot. Why did the batter fall off? Was the temperature too low?
