What are some ways to eat healthily while on the go?

We live very busy lifestyles and are frequently on the go.  How can you eat well when life is just too busy or you're not at home to prepare meals?

I always prepare and pack all my food in advance in a cooler.  Makes it easy to stay on track with my diet, no matter what the situation is.

Thumbs up to you jared! This is the best way to eat healthy...by packing your own.

I keep a package of mixed nuts and a couple of protein bars in my car.  Organic, unroasted, unsalted nuts are best. If you don't like unsalted, buy salt and unalted and mix together for 1/2 salt.

Dried fruit - apricots, apples, bananas, etc. are also good, but high in sugar.

Nowadays, most fast-food restaurants offer salads and other health oriented foods, so that even someone on the go can still eat healthy.  Additionally, fast-food restaurants list the calories on their billboards these days so people can know exactly what they're getting into before hand....

Subsequently, I don't believe it's a good idea to keep things to eat on your desk at work, because, you'll be eating all day long (I see this with people around me at work all of the times) ....

Preparing foods to take to work can take a long time...a luxury many of us cannot afford.

I would suggest having celery and carrots ready in the fridge in little resealable baggies. This makes it easy to stick with healthy foods. I find apples are easy to take so I always have apples on hand. I also prepare food in really big batches so I always have leftovers. I freeze them in small containers so all I have to do is thaw and serve. I take these to work and just heat them up. I hope this helps.

I would pack quite a few healthy snacks, Such as fruit and chopped vegetables. Plus, The fast food industry is slowly offering more healthy items on their menus.

A fresh smoothie takes minutes to blitz and minutes to drink, 5 minutes every morning is not impossible; get up five minutes earlier. Opt for a quality cereal like shredded wheat or weetabix if smoothies aren't your thing or breakfast yogurt bars are good too.
Lunch can be a sandwich on whole meal bread, prawns, chicken, egg, salad... most sandwich bars provide great options for healthy sandwiches. Salad bowls and soups are also good, add some fruit for more balance.
A few cookies or a mini kit kat mid afternoon won't ruin your waist line and will beat off the afternoon zzz's.
Dinner can be a quick pasta dish with tomato sauce and parmesan cheese, grilled chicken with a baked potato or previously made dinners, frozen and defrosted over the day. I often bulk cook at the weekend; pies, stews, casseroles, pasta dishes.
The hardest thing is to get motivated, once you start it gets easier, I know I've been there.
And please remember healthy doesn't mean all seeds and lettuce leaves. A good balance and a few treats is the right way to go.

I think that fruits are the best foods to eat while on the go. I have also written a hub on fruits, Maybe It will help you. Maybe just buy a fruit salad from the supermarket and have that as a meal. I hope that I have answers your question.

Tree nuts, peanuts, seeds, dried or fresh fruit, and I still say that potato chips are healthy along with chocolate candy!  Who cares if you're on the go, as long as you settle down to a well-balanced supper at the end of the day; healthy snacks are about as abundant as bananas are to a hyper monkey - just pay attention to what you snag up; simple as that!

You can pack fruits and vegetables that keep well even when not refrigerated--apples, carrots, celery, pears, etc.  That way you can keep them in your purse or desk and snack on them throughout the day so that you don't feel so hungry that you need to go to the drive through and order a double cheeseburger.

Like other posters suggested, if you do go out to eat, choose restaurants that have some healthy items on the menu like salads and plain chicken sandwiches.

I like granola bars, because they are already prepared for me and easy to transport too. There are some great ones with grains and dry fruit. I like Nature Valley varieties.

There are plenty of great restaurants and sandwich stores that offer healthy alternatives. But be warned they might be more expensive - it just depends!

I've been thinking about this question myself. Our kids play soccer and sometimes we are on the road for 2 hours just to get to a game. With soccer stuff and chairs in the trunk it is hard to jam a cooler of food in there too. On days that I can I prepare my own trail mixes and snacks. I have made my own peanut butter crackers for on the go and I slice fruit and take that in containers.

    1. Protein bars! I always keep an extra bar in my purse.
    2. Always have baggies of chopped veggies in the fridge. When you need a snack on the road, grab a baggie and munch on it.
    3. Fruit parfaits at fast food restaurants. Just because it's McDonalds doesn't mean EVERYTHING is fried!
    4. Breakfast smoothies! Make a smoothie, filled with protein (whey powder), spinach, fruits, peanut butter, and anything else. These could be a meal in themselves. There are lots of recipes online. And, you can make a huge one, and freeze the stuff you don't drink. Then, you can grab it whenever.
    5. Protein shakes. These are yummy, and they taste like milkshakes. Make sure to keep it refrigerated though!
    6. You can do the same thing with the veggies, except with fruit. Use a bit of lemon juice to keep apples from going brown. You can't taste it later on.
    7. PANERA BREAD. Panera is ranked the healthiest fast food place, but I don't even consider it fast food.
    8. Look up calorie amounts and nutrition info online for restaurants you know you'll be around. This will help you to pick a healthy option, and it will be fast.
    9. Bags of nuts, trail mix, and dried fruit. All have good protein, and are very filling and healthy.
    Good luck, and happy eating!

I try to make meals and snacks a head of time so your more likely to snack on something healthier rather than grab something not so healthy.

Try a granola bar for breakfast, a fastfood vegan lunch and find time to cook a bake spinach mac in the microwave oven for dinner.
