No way! You can't beat straight coffee (especially espresso!) and decaf just doesn't compare! I always thought it smelt like gravy as well, but that could just be me...!
Definitely not! To me, decaf has a - hmmm let's see - a flat taste. And before I even taste it, it even SMELLS flat. Now in all honesty, I haven't done a real test yet: putting both side-by-side without labels and tested my theory. So it could be that my mind is intentionally picking the one with the largest caffeine content. But ..... that works for me right now!
I would say that instant decaf doesn't even come close to regular coffee. Since I enjoy the flavored brewed coffee (from freshly ground beans) I am partial to the caffeinated, but I have often mixed it half-and-half with decaf (ground beans) and not noticed a difference. So, if you're comparing ground beans I'd have to say not much difference but if you're comparing decaf instant to regular ground, then there is a HUGE difference.
I find that decaf definitely tastes a little more bitter than regular. I agree with FloBe that when the ground beans are mixed to make half-and-half the difference is not noticeable. I have 1 canister of regular ground beans and 1 of decaf, and I mix them in the coffee filter when it's time to brew so I can pick my own strength of coffee to make.
No and i donĀ“t mean decaf is distasteful but is not as good as regular.
No, decaf does not taste the same as regular coffee. When you drink decaf coffee, it taste flat like something missing. Regular coffee taste better to me.

Decaffeinated Coffee? What is the point?I gave up drinking coffee about a month ago because I was feeling overdosed from drinking too many cups every day. I liked to drink coffee because it seemed to psyche me up for work. I am now drinking tea instead. I could always drink decaffeinated coffee but...
