Caramel apple crisp

Caramel apple crisp is one of those desserts that is usually made in the fall. It isn't hard to make, and makes a wonderful family time adventure. Apples are such an abundance in the fall, so lots of desserts are made from apples. What is different about this, it isn't just a sweet, it can be eaten with your meal. The best part about this dessert is the ability to use several different types of apples giving it more flavor. However, the secret to this is the caramel. Once you have taken a bite of this dessert you will not want any more store bought pies. The best part is that you can serve it with icecream. It is most popular at Grandma house.

Ingredients that you will need

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup cold butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 8 cups thinly sliced peeled apples
  • 14 ounces caramels, halved
  • 1 cup apple cider, divided into two separate containers

Directions

In a large bowl, combine the 3 cups of oats, 2 cups all-purpose flour,1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar. Add butter in this mixture until it becomes crumbly. Take half of this mixture and put in a greased 13 in.x 9 in. baking dish. Then add a layer with four cups of the apples, caramels and 1 cup oat mixture. Then you will repeat the layers. When completed you will pour one half cup of cider over the top.

Bake this apple crisp uncovered, at 350° for 30 minutes. Once the thirty minutes are up drizzle with the other half of the cider. Put back in the oven and bake an extra fifteen to twenty minutes longer. Once you think it is finished, you will need to check the apples to be sure they are tender. If finished get your ice cream out of the freezer, or get your cup of coffee ready, and enjoy. This recipe should give you twelve to fourteen servings depending on how much of a helping you give.
