Drug Menace in the Philippines

Methamphetamine Hydrochloride (Shabu).Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or Ecstasy. Marijuana.Cocaine. Ephedrine.

These are some of the commonly abused drugs in the Philippines. Recently, the drug problem is quite alarming. The increasing number of arrested drug traffickers, seizures of big volumes of dangerous drugs, controlled precursors and essential chemicals and dismantling of clandestine laboratories since the conception of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency show the extent and impact of the drug abuse and drug trade problem in the Philippines.

The illegal trade of methamphetamine hydrochloride commonly known as "shabu" has grown into a P1 billion-a-day industry, but the drug has now become more expensive, making it “the poor man’s cocaine no more,” antinarcotics officials and international drug reports said. Recently, the average street price of "shabu" in the Philippines ranges from P15,000.00 - P17,000.00 depending on the demographical location (regional, provincial, city, or municipal). The increase of prices of shabu was due to the government success on dismantling of clandistine laboratories nationwide.

Thus, these problems don't limit on trafficking and production of drugs but go beyond the problem of drug addiction. Drug addiction is the cradle of heinous crimes committed by persons. 65% of the suspects are drug addicts. Drug addiction respects no boundaries.

The worsening drug abuse in the country can be gleaned from the fact that in 1972, there were only 20,000 drug users in the Philippines. In 2004, this figure has climbed to an astounding 6.7 million. Methamphetamine hydrochloride or "shabu" and marijuana are the illegal drugs preferred by one in every 29 Filipinos aged 10 to 44 years.

While drug abuse is alarming in the country, the government is strong fisted in the fight of eradicating the supply and demand of illegal drugs. Thus, drug lords, big time drug pushers and transnational syndicates are laughing their way to their banks using the "dirty money" which is the proceeds of illegal drugs and invest the money to legitimate businesses. They are having a field day destroying lives and future of the people courtesy of inutile and corrupt government agencies.

The law enforcers cannot do it alone. The prosecutors and judges cannot move on without harmonious relationship. The problem rest upon us. It starts within ourselves.

Schools, churches, civic organizations, non-government organizations and private groups and individuals must all do their share and contribute to the battle against illegal drugs.

This country cannot afford to waste its future to drug addiction. If the war on illegal drugs is lost, the future of the country will follow the wrong direction. Despite and in spite of the government, Filipinos must remain resolute in their resolve to win the war against illegal drugs.

PLEASE WATCH THIS PRESENTATION... MAY EVERYONE CAN REALIZE THE EFFECTS OF ILLEGAL DRUGS.

ILLEGAL DRUG ABUSER

daluhong 5 years ago

kung gagamit kayo ng drugs, like during parties, its better if you use ecstasy. it will get you high but is really not addictive, unlike shabu or marijuana. you can control yourself as to when to take the drugs, di ka matutulad sa adik sa shabu na may side effects. lesser pa ang chance mo mahuli bcos policemen are not familiar with it, they only know shabu and weeds. kya naman sa mga gimikan very common na ang bentahan ng E, you can buy easily if you know who to talk to

jen 5 years ago

so bkit ilegal kung di naman pala addictive? im just curious kung ano tama nyan. wer can i buy some and how much

Im a student of master in government management (plm). I believe leading government agencies such as PDEA and DDB are doing their best to curtail drug production and trafficking in our country. Their efforts and resources may not be enough. This gives way for the ngos to partner with our government agencies by educating potential victims on the perils and health hazard in using illegal drugs. In that way, we can make them dislike or say no to the lure of and temporary pleasure of using illegal drugs.

Drug War has failed..look for other solutions....let the government handle the drugs not the Drug Lords...LEGALIZE!!!

Melancholic 5 years ago

I guess the government should act upon in giving penalties to drug addicts as well. Our community in our province is already ill with these abusers. Also the pnp just prioritize trafficers which is sad to to know.

everything that is created has it's own bad effect to the person or anything that has a contact in it. You don't need drugs to forget your problems, just ask advice with the person who is close to you. Everybody is thinking on the negative side, why not put your thinking into something that is positive. Ika nga ni Robin Padilla; "think positive, walang aayaw!"

Government manipulation lng yang mga drug laws...read the history of drug prohibition...t use it to attack minorities...bakit drug lord sinisisi nyo? drug lords exist because of prohibition, are the drug lords here to sell alcohol?...30 years ko nang naririnig na masusugpo nila ang droga pero bakit dumadamia ang addict...Im not sure if they can stop the drug problem but ito ang sigurado...DRUG FREE PHILIPPINES ay imposibble at lalung dadami at lalakas ang droga dahil sa teknolohiya...Sabi nga nang mga UN leaders "The War on drugs is a total failure"...wag kayo masyadong maniwala sa Media...nasa internet ang katotohanan..

you can report any drug personalities to PDEA, especially in the NCR area to this email add intel_roncr@yahoo.com. You can also contact them in their FB acct. "Pdea Ro-ncr Dos". Be as complete in giving information as possible, especially to bigtime drug pushers. You can also contact this number 09993829894. Rewards may be given to informants who gave information which resulted in the successful arrest and seizure of significant volume of illegal drugs. Lets gear toward a drug free Philippines.

THE USED AND CONSEQUENT ABUSES ASSOCIATED WITH DRUGS ARE NOT PHENOMENA. PRIMITIVE PEOPLE USED DRUGS TO INDUCE STATES OF INTOXICATION DURING RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES. AS EARLY AS 2700 BC, THE CHINESE USED MARIJUANA UNDER EMPEROR SHEN NENG AS PRESCRIPTION FOR GOUT, CONSTIPATION AND ABSENTMINDEDNESS. THE EGYPTIANS USED OPIUM IN 1500 BC, AS PESCRIPTION FOR INDUCING SLEEP AND CURING MENTAL DISORDER. ITS WIDESPREAD USED, HOWEVER TOOK PLACE BETWEEN 1805 AND 1832, WHEN MORPHINE AND CODEIN (METHYLMORPHINE) BOTH OPIUM ALKOLOIDS WERE DISCOVERED. WITH THE INVENTION OF THE HYPODERMIC NEEDLE IN 1843, NARCOTIC ADDICTION SPREAD THROUGHOUT EUROPE AND AMERICA. AMONG THE PROMINENT PERSONS WHO TOOK DRUGS WITHOUT REALIZING ITS DANGEROUS EFFECTS WERE AMERICAN POET EDGAR ALLAN POE AND ENGLISH POETS FRANCIS THOMPSON,SAMUEL COLERIDGE AND THOMAS DE QUINCY, AUTHOR OF ‘’CONFESIONS OF AN ENGLISH OPIUM EATER.

The drug war has failed and needs to be dismanteled. The only goal achieved is to make the lives of unfortunate people worse, or end them.

Drug addicts need help for their addiction. Some people might need drugs like opiates or stimulants because of illnesses or problems, and some people who use them once in a while might think they're fine and don't need any help. There should be help for all kinds of drug use except the harmless kind, instead of prohibition and an endless cycle of violence between criminals and society.

howcan we avoid drug addiction?

arnold 3 years ago

drug is the source of the second life of a person because at this time if you have no money you will die earlier.

Cesar 3 years ago

The only way to stop the proliferation of drug use in the Philippines is to make it a non profitable business for drug lords. In some countries, addicts are registered in the health system and given controlled doses of the substance they are addicted to for free. They take their doses only in the government medical facilities and not outside. Thus they do not need to steal or rob innocent people to support their addiction. With the tons of Shabu confiscated by our law enforcers, this could be put to good use. Having our addicts registered it would be easy to track them down and rehabilitate them. They are victims and need to be helped. Hence no buyers, the drug trade will die a natural death.

this unending war initiated by the government to cut the trunk of those traffickers who ruin the lives of many of our countrymen will be in vain if our authorities are keep on looking their personal interest not on the interest of the victim public. Reality speaks that the philippines has become the green pastures of the big drug syndicate in the world. So sad!
