We always have a large mincemeat pie for Thanksgiving - but this year for Christmas I'm making the indivual ones like my Mum used to make back in England! Sadly I can't get Mrs. Kipling or Marks and Spencer's minced pies over here!!!
I love mincemeat pies. For me they're an important part of the holiday season. Sometimes I include them at Thanksgiving, although I don't like to detract attention away from sweet potato or pumpkin pies. It's just that sometimes I can't wait for Christmas and New Year's mincemeat pies.
Do you mean mincemeaat as in minced red meat, or mince as in minced fruit? Here is Australia, they are two completely different things. I love my mince (fruit) pies - fly cemeteries, I call them - at Xmas.
Eew! NOT minced meat! . Some recipes for it may include meat (especially in the past or maybe in other countries), but that's not the recipe a lot of people (at least in present-day US) associate with "classic" mince pie. (Our flies, here in New England, are all dead by Christmas. The right spider could hide nicely in a mincemeat pie, though.)
Oh... It's great! One set of ingredients is raisins, apples, eggs, sugar, oranges, spices and lemon peel. But, the kind that also has rum in it is REALLY good. (BUT, apparently, it's a matter of personal opinion. )
Yep, we definitely still eat these, only they are referred to as 'Mince Pies' here (Britain), not 'Mincemeat Pies', maybe to avoid any confusion as there is no meat included in them. I am not a huge fan of them, but usually have at least one each Christmas because it is traditional and keeps my Mum happy.
When we (kids in my family) were young our father (who usually wouldn't have said or done anything at all insensitive) would joke that we shouldn't eat any mincemeat pies because we'd be eating "all the cute little minces" and they wouldn't have wanted to be eaten. It was really disturbing to us, so it didn't take him long to say he was only joking. (Oh, and he'd make little squeaky noises as if the "cute little minces" were complaining about being eaten. )
I use the original recipe from Eastern Ohio and a part of Virginia 250-300 years ago that came over from the UK with ancestors. I make my own for the pie, with the real shredded beef in it; I posted the recipe.
I remember as a child that after the Midnight Service at church on Christmas Eve, the minister would invite the congregation to the Church Hall for hot drinks and mince(meat) pies. The drink would often be cocoa or hot chocolate and this was my worst nightmare as I never did like anything sweet - food or drink. They do remain, however, as popular as ever, all year round so far as I have observed and not just at Christmas.
I never liked mincemeat pies. However, my family still eats it at Christmas time. It has been a tradition for years in my family. I am one member who will be not keeping that tradition at all. I will make all the other goodies and foods, but that is off my list.
just read this after i posted this....... you do not live in the North of England do you, by any chance.... If you do your mum probably makes mince pies with robertsons mince, from the jam factory..... the best mince in the world, and yes i would say your mums are yummy as were my mums. Does she make a little pattern on the top with a fork.... Maybe they even went to the same school.
my mum made the best mince pies in the world...... warm them in microwave and pour so much cream on them it spills off the plate. Whenever i buy them ready made they are always far too sweet.... I think they must put sugar in the pastry. I may make some one day, i had actually forgotton about them.... Which goes to show i did not see any around this Xmas.
When I was growing up, we always had one at Thanksgicing and at Christmas. But we alwasy had a blueberry pie too, and us kids loved the blueberry pie most of all and would gobble it up, leaving the mincemeat pie for the grownups. I know I've had mincemeat pie but it's been so long ago I don't remember what it tastse like.
