Good Things Can Come in Small Packages
Many restaurants are adding small sized desserts, which can be a great option for when you just need a little sweetness after a meal. But beware; even though they are just a couple of bites, some are still loaded with fat and calories. These small morsels can pack a big punch, right in the gut, if you think you can have three of them due to their deceiving size.
Chili’s offers “Sweet Shots”, small desserts served in shot glasses that are just a couple of bites. They range from 240 calories (Key Lime Pie) to 420 calories (Double Fudge Brownie). The double fudge brownie is impressive, in that they have found a way to pack 420 calories, 24 grams of fat, and about an entire day’s worth of saturated fat (14 grams) into a couple of bites. PF Chang’s offers “Mini Desserts”, calories range from 100 (Mini Tiramisu or Mini Great Wall) to 240 (Mini S’mores)… not bad.
When looking at the nutrition information I found that most of the small sized desserts were good options, many are less than 250 calories. That is much better than their regular sized counterparts that often top 1000 calories. The key….avoid the highest calorie small sized dessert such as the Chili’s “Double Fudge Brownie” and eat just one, resist ordering the sampler!
A healthier option that also may satisfy your sweet craving is fruit. The average mini dessert was around 200 calories, for just a couple of bites. For the same amount of calories, you can eat 3 cups of raspberries, or three small apples. Many restaurants have fruit available if you ask, even if they don’t list it on the menu.
So remember, while these little delights look harmless and can be a good way to satisfy a craving; they can do some serious damage if you don’t keep them under control.
