This book is written to help families transition to a vegan diet (or just incorporate more vegan meals) at their own pace. It gives numerous ideas to help kids and adults eat healthier, explains the vegan diet, provides nutritional information, and describes how to stock a vegan kitchen.
And there are plenty of fantastic vegan recipes!
This book is written by both Mayim Bialik and Dr. Jay Gordon. Mayim appears in television shows "Blossom" and "The Big Bang Theory" and is also a trained neuroscientist. Dr. Jay is a pediatrician and pediatric nutritionist. Both are vegan and are vegan parents, so they are understanding and compassionate when it comes to the various challenges we sometimes face in trying to feed our kids healthy foods. I like how the tone used throughout the book is supportive and caring; it is not judgmental.
The goal presented in this book is to move toward a plant-based diet in a way that makes sense to your family. This leads to increased health and wellness for you and your kids, as well as less suffering for animals.
I was truly impressed when I read both the information and recipes presented in this book. It's an excellent resource, written in a friendly tone.
The recipes in Mayim's Vegan Table focus on options that are child-friendly and are easy to prepare, which gives it two big thumbs up in my book! There are suggestions for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts, and snacks. The recipes are simple - not overwhelming to those who may just be learning about preparing vegan dishes. At the same time, there are interesting recipes that are not just for those who are new to vegan cooking. I've been vegan/vegetarian since 1992, and there are recipes in here that are brand new for me! (For example, quinoa burgers, maple mustard greens, and soft pretzels.) Some of the dishes are based on whole foods, while others incorporate vegan cheese and other convenience foods. There are also recipes for homemade vegan cheeses, based on whole foods.
Mayim's Jewish heritage shines through, as there are a handful of veganized Jewish recipes sprinkled throughout the book. I was thrilled to see recipes for dishes such as kugel, latkes, hamantaschen, and challah. This is a special bonus to those of us who are both Jewish and vegan!
Mayim's Vegan Kitchen is a solid resource to help families transition to a vegan diet. The recipes are interesting, well-thought-out, child-friendly, and easy to make. The information presented in the book is inspiring and supportive.
