How to Make Naan Bread Pizza
What is Naan Bread Pizza?
Naan bread pizza is simply a very effective fusion of Indian and Italian cuisine. An Indian naan bread is spread with tomato based sauce, followed by the pizza toppings of choice and cheese, before being baked in a hot oven. The toppings which can be included on a naan bread pizza are as varied as can be used on a conventional pizza and the result is every bit as tasty. The benefit of a naan bread pizza is that it gives pizza lovers a slight break from the norm, while still affording the traditional attractions of any other pizza.
All of the pizzas featured on this page use naan bread purchased from a supermarket, premade and requiring only reheating. Any leftover pizza from an Indian takeaway could, however, be used very effectively in precisely the same way. The tomato sauce is also standard in each instance but the sauce is very simply homemade and therefore the logical point at which to start the recipes for naan bread pizzas.
Naan Bread and Tomato Sauce for Pizza Naan
The naan breads used in each of the recipes on this page are 10" long, by about 6" at there widest part. The tomato sauce recipe described below is as required for each naan bread pizza.
Empty an 8oz can of chopped tomatoes in to a saucepan. Grate in one peeled clove of garlic with a small hand grater. Season with salt, pepper and half a teaspoon of dried basil. Put on to a high heat until a simmer is achieved. Reduce the heat and simmer as gently as possible, stirring occasionally, for fifteen to twenty minutes until a lush sauce is formed.
Remove the sauce from the heat, cover and allow to cool completely. In each of the recipes below, the sauce will be spread evenly on the naan bread, the toppings added as described and the combinations cooked in a hot oven, preheated to 450F/220C for 10 minutes.
Ham and Mushroom Naan Bread Pizza
2 large closed cup mushrooms
3oz cold ham
2oz cheddar cheese
2oz pizza mozzarella cheese
1tsp freshly chopped cilantro/coriander leaf
Slice the mushrooms to a thickness of about quarter of an inch and lay them on the top of the tomato sauce. tear or roughly chop the ham and arrange it on top of the mushrooms.
The cheddar cheese should be grated but the mozzarella is best sliced and chopped in ot thin, one inch strips. The two cheeses should be mixed roughly together by hand before being spread evenly on to the pizza. Season with freshly ground black pepper.
When the pizza is removed from the oven and transferred to the serving plate, the chopped cilantro/coriander should be scattered over the top prior to service.
Roast Chicken Naan Bread Pizza
This recipe is an excellent way of using up leftover roast chicken from the previous night's dinner to make a tasty and satisfying lunch.
4oz leftover roast chicken
4oz cheddar cheese
1 tsp chopped flat leaf parsley
The roast chicken can be breast meat or leg. It should be torn in to moderately small pieces or chopped, before being scattered evenly over the tomato sauce. The cheese should be grated and scattered over the top. Season with salt and black pepper.
The parsley should be chopped and scattered over the pizza only after it has been removed from the oven and immediately prior to service.
Pizza of Endless Varieties is Possible
Naan bread pizza is just one of the many ways in which pizza can be varied. There are any number of ways in which the concept can be developed to suit individual tastes and even the requirements of the occasion. The excellent book to the right provides no less than 500 recipes for pizzas for the oven and grill, as well as flatbreads from around the world, many of which can be used for pizza.
Sausage and Bacon Naan Bread Pizza
2 beef sausages
2 rashers of back bacon (unsmoked)
4oz grated cheddar cheese
The sausages and bacon have to be cooked and cooled, prior to being included in the pizza. A little vegetable oil should be added to a non-stick frying pan. Add the sausages to the pan and fry on the lowest heat setting for twenty minutes, turning frequently. Cook the bacon for two minutes each side under an overhead grill. Transfer the sausages and bacon to a plate, cover and allow to cool completely.
Slice the sausages at a forty-five degree angle to obtain larger wedges, to a thickness of about a quarter of an inch. Slice the bacon in to quarter inch strips. Arrange them alternately over the tomato sauce on the naan bread. Scatter the cheese over the top and season.
