P.F. Chang's China Bistro in Anaheim CA - Restaurant Review - Menu/Prices
Located at the "Anaheim Garden Walk" adjacent to the Anaheim Convention Center and a short distance from Disneyland is where you'll find "P.F. Chang's". A charmingly exotic American Asian-restaurant which in my educated opinion, serves up some of the absolute best Chinese Food in Orange County.
Touted as the "China Bistro", upon arrival, your senses encounter the first signs of something very special from the very moment you walk in the front door and savor the distinct sweet aroma of fresh Asian Cuisine beckoning you to pull up a cushioned, red leather upholstered chair and begin to sample everything on the menu. If you're from the East Coast where American Chinese Cuisine is plentiful and irrefutably cooked almost to perfection, I'm sure you've established a very high culinary bar by which to measure quality revealing elements such as freshness, ingredients, and taste. Please read on as I continue to share my delightful P.F. Chang's experience with you in detail, and then offer a complete, summarized overall review and opinion to assist with your dining engagement plans.
We left our bungalow early evening on a Monday and were fortunate enough to arrive at 4:15 p.m. roughly 30 minutes before the inevitable dinner rush crowd which allowed me ample opportunity to capture some pristine pictures of the interior before it got really busy -
P.F. Chang's China Bistro is conveniently located at the prestigious "Anaheim Garden Walk" on Katella Ave. in Anaheim California. The venue consists of an upscale shopping mall which is home to a number of fine department stores and situated right on the main street is a "Restaurant Row" that includes P.F. Chang's of course, McCormick & Schmick's, The Cheesecake Factory, and several other extremely popular fine dining establishments. It's an all in one, self contained shopping and dining experience where the outside scenery and manicured landscape enhances the unique interior designs almost to perfection. The venue encourages a casual dress atmosphere conducive to major tourist activity yet you can't help but feel like you're being treated to an afternoon or evening of culinary and shopping enjoyment that should cost much more.
You will not find the typical Chinese Restaurant décor at P.F. Chang's. The atmosphere does indeed resemble a high end, continental bistro contained within a spacious upscale enclave more than a traditional Asian establishment devoted to providing an explicitly realistic dining and motif experience.
There is plenty of open space resulting in minimal congestion and ease of breathing even though the restaurant can at times, get extremely crowded, and the tall ceilings are raised to an abnormally elevated height which creates the tangible sensation of fresh air circulation at all times.
The light fixtures have a distinct Asian flair, but the rest of the interior has a more modernized or contemporary design and feel to it with sporadic flashes of a Chinese touch. The table and chairs including the bar stools, are made of classic wood topped with a scarlet red seat cover. The bar area is immaculate and the rich charcoal gray swirl marble counter top is a nice compliment to accentuate the balance of the interior. Two matching LCD Monitors bookend the opposing sides providing the sports fan with an unimpeded view from just about any angle, and a large, imposing, beautifully kept recessed glass wall which reflects the sparkling display of bottled spirits, adorns the back of the bar area. "Happy Hour" specials are available so if interested, call ahead to inquire about the prevailing schedule or other details.
If you would prefer an outdoor dining experience, there are plenty of tables which overlook the Garden Walk amenities -
Even though the restaurant is located in an upscale tourist section of Anaheim, the prices are very reasonable for the quality of cuisine and atmosphere. Prices for Appetizers/Starters range from approximately $7 to $10 and Entrees are moderately higher at $10 to $15. The highest priced dish I noticed was a "P.F. Chang's Steak Diner" listed for $25.
As a huge, semi-rabid fan of this cuisine, I felt compelled or obliged to indulge in just about everything on the menu to satisfy my intense curiosity. My personal favorites regardless of specific restaurant are "Fried Rice Dishes" and "Sweet & Sour Chicken", but since I drove quite a distance to get there, I was definitely in the splurging mood. So to the detriment of my budget and explicit diet, I ordered all of the above plus the "Almond Cashew Chicken", "Chicken Wrap", and "Spare Ribs" for my sit down dinner and a little more for take out.
All the food arrived at the table sizzling hot and the ingredients were fresh to the taste. I'm happy to report I was not disappointed in any way with my "Entrees" or "Starter" selections, as a matter of fact, it turned out to the best Chinese Food Dining experience I've ever had in Southern California, and I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to this category of Asian style cuisine. In the past, I had always entered every Chinese Restaurant here in Orange County with very high hopes of finding the one place which would turn out to be a that "New York" style establishment, serving mouth watering East Coast influenced cuisine. Needless to say, I'd always been disappointed until taking my first bite of "Sweet & Sour" at P.F. Chang's.
If you're originally from the Northeastern part of the country, my recommendation would be to give P.F. Chang's a try. It's certainly not quintessential "East Coast", but in my opinion, it's the closest any restaurant in Orange County has come to duplicating the masterful, exquisite "New York" style and taste.
- From the waiters and waitresses, to the upbeat, cheerfully affable, and very personable bartenders, we were unquestionably the satisfied recipients of top quality service, food, and drink. The entire staff was courteous, friendly, and very timely in taking our order and delivering our food which was hot to the taste. When dining at the bar, your order is electronically transmitted without delay to the kitchen via a simple finger tip touch to the computer screen. This system which seems elementary to most, does however save a considerable amount of time to process your requests, resulting in a quicker turn around to receive your cuisine and begin a dining experience.
- Even though P.F. Chang's is located right on Katella Ave. parking on the street is not allowed, however, a large multi level garage is situated right around the corner and adjacent to "Bubba Gump's" family style restaurant. Just take a ticket from the window at the entrance, and enjoy the first two hours of your stay free and pay a reasonable charge for any additional time. The entrance is wide and spacious consisting of two to four lanes for traffic entering and the same for exiting vehicles, so unless there is a special event scheduled, weekend activity, or other extraordinary circumstances, congestion in and around the venue is typically minimal. The garage provides plenty of handicapped parking situated right in front as you enter and once you've identified where you wish to park as a result of availability, it's a very short walk to the restaurant once you've found your space.
- REVIEW -
The food is fresh and delicious, the service from dining area to the bar is superb, the entire staff is courteous and affable, and the prices are very reasonable considering the popular tourist attraction location. There are a variety of diversely prepared dishes to choose from and the gluten free selections are a nice option for those who prefer this alternative to remain in compliance with dietary restrictions or requirements. The only aspect I would consider changing within the context of ambiance or amenities would be the two LCD TV's perched atop and to the alternating sides of the bar. A slightly larger screen to facilitate the entire bar vicinity and guests seated within the dining area, would be a welcomed addition. Overall, the entire experience was well worth the forty plus mile drive I made to get there and another visit in the very near future is already marked on the calendar. I was extremely pleased with the entire experience from beginning to end and P.F. Chang's is now ranked supreme as my absolute favorite Chinese Cuisine Bistro in Orange County -
