Good hot summer weather brings abundance of fresh fruits. Bringing back my childhood memories, We use to eat countless varieties of tropical fruits such as banana, mango, durian, etc. Mostly we consume it as desserts. But some creative culinary adventures create a very unique method to diversify the simplest fruit into easy and flavorful desserts. One of it is pisang bakar or grilled banana. Of course Indonesian style with little bit western fusion. Thank goodness, banana is easily to find in North America and summer is perfect time for grilling, my favorite activities.
Here is my quick easy to fix grilled banana sundae recipe. Smoky grilled banana, savory cheese, candy sweet condensed milk, sweet bitter chocolate sprinkles and vanilla ice cream make this summer dessert is a star !. Give it a try to you will not disappointed.
How to make Indonesian grilled banana
ripe but still firm plantains or just regular banana
grated cheddar cheese
sweetened condensed milk
unsalted sweet butter
vanilla ice cream
Cut off the top and bottom of plantains, then peel the skin back. Next step is cut peeled plaintains in half lengthwise and cut each pieces in half crosswise. Brush each pieces with butter. Preheat your grill/BBQ. I prefer charcoal grill to bring plantains/banana aroma and flavor out. Grill banana until it's majesty golden brown.
Serve your grilled banana/plaintains with grated cheese, chocolate sprinkle and sweetened condensed milk. Add your favorite crepes and vanilla ice cream to cheer your day up!. Enjoy.

How to choose plantains
For grilling, I prefer semi- ripe plantains since it's firm but you if your prefer softer plantains , choose fully ripe one. Fully ripe plantains will have completely black skin and you can feel it soft to touch whilst semi-ripe one has some black spotted on it's skin. Grilling will release plantains natural sugar, resulting good smoky, sweet and intense flavor.
