A Steak Sandwich is an Incredibly Versatile Creation

A steak sandwich is something which can be enjoyed at virtually any time of day, either as a main meal, or as a snack, depending probably upon the size of the sandwich. In a similar sense, those ingredients which accompany steak on a sandwich or are served with a steak sandwich are equally diverse. This particular steak sandwich focuses on being quick and easy to prepare, delivering all the taste that would be expected from such a mouth-watering dish and being sufficiently satisfying as to serve as a main meal.

Quick and Easy Steak Sandwich Ingredients

The ingredients required for this quick and easy steak sandwich are fairly common and straightforward. They are as follows:

6oz thinly cut steak, suitable for frying

1 10" French style bread roll

1/2 large red onion

Handful of fresh rocket leaves (arugula)

1 tbsp hot horseradish sauce

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

A little sunflower or vegetable oil for frying

Cooking the Steak and Onions

The first step in preparing this steak sandwich is to cook the steak. The steak should be seasoned on both sides with freshly ground black pepper and a little sea salt. Although seasoning beef with salt can cause it to be served tough - as the salt draws the moisture out of the meat - that relates more to when lengthier cooking time is required and will not have any noticeable effect in this very quickly fried steak.

The oil should be put in to a frying-pan and the pan brought up to a very high heat. The steak should then be added and fried for around three minutes each side, turning only once. It is important to remove the steak from the pan after this time to a plate and set it aside to rest for a few minutes to rest.

While the steak is frying, the onion should be sliced across the way and separated in to rings. These rings should be added to the frying-pan from which the steak has just been removed, the heat reduced to medium and lightly fried while the steak is resting. A couple of minutes is sufficient to fry the onions, moving them around frequently in the pan, or they will become over-cooked.

Choosing, Cooking and Serving Steaks

Different people have widely varying opinions regarding what is the best cut of steak, how it is best prepared and with what it is best served. This book looks at steaks across the broad spectrum and how to get the best out of them to suit different individual tastes.

Building the Quick and Easy Steak Sandwich

The sandwich bread should ideally be bought fresh on the day upon which the sandwich is to be prepared. If for whatever reason the bread is not quite at its best, however, placing it in a low oven for five minutes or so while the steak is frying will serve to freshen it up a little.

The bread should be halved horizontally and laid out on a chopping board as shown, while the onions are frying and the steak is resting. Both halves should then be spread liberally with horseradish sauce and the rocket placed on the bottom half.

When the steak is rested, it should be sliced and placed atop the rocket, before finally the onions are added. The top should then be carefully put in place and pressed down gently but firmly.

This quick and easy steak sandwich may then be sliced as desired and served. It will serve as a satisfying meal for one or simply as a tasty snack for up to four people.

Note also that although this sandwich is best enjoyed hot, it can very much also be eaten cold.

Thank you very much, Victoria. It is a sandwich I tend to make quite often, especially when I know available cooking time is going to be short. For something that is so quick and easy to make, it really does taste good.
