I Live in Australia and proudly do so 6 years ago

Um so we fed our rabbit a lot of silverbeat and cucumber plant and the next day we went out side to his cage and he was very distressed. That morning it was about 39 degrees celcius, He was panting and it looked like he had thrown up due to the yellow mucus-ey stuff around his mouth and nose and on his chest. After we saw him we decided to bring him inside with a wet towl and started to gentle rub him with it. After five minutes inside he had calmed down a bit and we let him run around inside, he stayed near the walker (which is metal) and is still there.

How did he become so stressed? How do we prevent it? and what should we do if it happens again?

Nishacee97 profile image

Nishacee97 6 years ago from Wales. Author

Hey. The Drooling Might Be A Dental Disease and if the rabbit isn't used to being outside then he could be distressed from the heat. If your rabbit is used to being outside on hot days then you should always put a frozen ice pad or pack out for him to lie on if he is feeling hot. When you brought him in and if he was hot then that would explain him being next to the metal walker(because its cool). As for the mucus it could also be an allergic reaction to the silverbeet or cucumber plant. I suggest you go to the vet asap.

Hope this helps =]

furbabymommy 6 years ago

Ty for all the information nishacee97. I have a 7 week old bunny. I've read some sites that say I should wait until she is 6 months old before giving her anything but hay and pellets, and others that say its ok to give some fruits or veggies already. I know the person I got her from was giving her carrots, but I also know that she separated the bunnies from their mom too young so I don't know what to trust. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi i just recently got a 7 week old bunny and the owner was very caring and loving to them. But now that i have it i let it out so it can get excersize and it immediately runs away from me. it also doesn't lick my hand when i pick it up, in fact when i pick it up it does nothing. It only trys to get out then after 5 sec. it stops trying and ignores me. I belive its because i just took it away from its family and its lonley...

Help?

Hi, my friend that lives across the road's rabbit has had some baby's. They are a month old now, and i am keeping one for myself.

i was wondering when i take my bunny home (when its ready to leave the mother) would i be able to take my bunny across the road every weekend to visit its sister/brother that my friend is keeping? im worried that my bunny will get lonely, however i don't want to risk them fighting.

thankyou! {: xxx

ManD33 ... Yes Your Rabbit Is Fine With Any Dark Leaved Plant Including Cabbage. Romaine Lettuce Is Fine, But Only Give Your Rabbit A Little. To Litter Train Your Bunny You Have To Be Patient. When you let your rabbit out of his cage to play, make sure you put some litter boxes around the room and put some soiled sawdust or straw in the box so your rabbit understands that that's where he's supposed to poop. Also, whenever you see your rabbit pooping pick him up and put him straight into his litter box. This takes time but eventually your rabbit will pick it up and it will be much easier to keep your bunnies clean :) Hope this helped !

amzy ... You can take your rabbit over the road to your friends house for the first couple of weeks but after that i wouldn't take him there because as rabbits get older they like their own territory and may try to attack any other rabbit that enters it. Don't worry about your rabbit being lonely, as long as you give him plenty of attention then he should be fine :) Hope this helped !

amzy 6 years ago

ahh, i see. im just worried that it will get lonely.

another reason i wish to take it over there is the pure fact its a little more rabbit-friendly than my garden.

i have a cat that doesent seem to get along with smaller creatures haha.

my garden has a lot of flowers and the grass don't seem to be as long and lush as my friends garden. i also have a lot of fern trees- of which if my rabbit goes behind them it will be tricky to get it out again.

this is my 1st time of owning a rabbit, but i have owned a guinypig.

my friends' rabbit and babies have been let out in the garden before, and love it.

don't get me wrong, i will always give my rabbit attention, and feed it regular, but i would love it to be able to visit its sister/brother and mother and be able to run around freely in my friends garden.

(sorry for the long paragraphs!)

:)

My pet rabbit is a netherland, loped dwarf and enjoys eating palm tree leaves. I'm not certain which type of palm tree it is but are they alright to eat? Also when she wees it's an orangy, red colour. I'm pretty sure this is bad and it hasn't gone away. We initially thought it was because she kept getting in and eating the leaves on the Chilli plant we have. (she doesn't seem to eat the actual chillis though, only the leaves) We've stoped her eating any part of the plant but she's still weeing an orangy, red colour. She's getting her spade soon, could that be also be a contributing factor?

I got a three month old dwarf rabbit. He/She has been vaccinated before I bought him/her. I want to feed him/her other veggies besides his/her pellets and timothy hay. I read that you can give young rabbits as much pellets as they can eat but once they get older limit it to prevent them from getting fat. I sprinkle the hay on the floor, in his/her bowl and in his/her litter box (I do this to promote his use of the litter, he went pee in it for the first time today which was awesome).

This is my fourth day with him/her. I fed him/her a bit of apple the first day, he seemed to enjoy it but on further reading it was explained to me not to feed them fruits to them until they are older. I feed him/her carrots. I do this because at the pet store they left some for all the rabbits. How much can you give them, size wise. And what else is good for baby rabbits? When can I introduce fruits like apples, bananas (from my understanding you don't give them a lot, just small pieces).

Mercedesmann 6 years ago

Is it also normal for a rabbit to pee a lot? No pain. He seems ok when he goes but he is peeing a lot. Drinking a lot too it seems. I give him a little chunk of a carrot. And the hay, as it says above.

ManicMummy 6 years ago

Thanks so much for your useful guide. My 2 dwarf lop ears have the run of my garden during the day, but they are eating everything, even my fences. They are pooing all over the garden, will a litter tray in the garden work the same as in a hutch? They don't really like being handled, but will let me stroke them when they are in the hutch, we've had them since they were 7 weeks and they are now 5 months. Also just wondering is it ok to keep the hutch out during winter, or should it go in the garage?

Many thanks

Mercedesmann, Try not to put to much hay on the floor of your rabbits hut/cage as it isn't healthy for them to eat stuff that has been stood or walked on. Hope the hub helped (:

i just wanted to comment and say that my bunny eats iceburg lettuce, and loves it. nothing but has ever happened to her and she has been having it for months.she doesn't have that much only about a cup of lettuce every few days and she is still very active and not sick at all! many other web-sites say that iceburg lettuce is great for your pets!also i have been giving her lettuce since she was 7 weeks old (but only a little a week) and she absolutley fall head over heels for it and still has normal behavior!

thank you,

A.. they may be fine but iceburg lettuce is not good for your rabbit. Your rabbit may be fine eating it but some rabbits just eat one leaf and contract GIStatis and normally die. Hope the hub helped(:

Nishacee97 profile image

Vinnie.. Yup...chipati is ok to feed in balance with other vegetables.

veg is best fed uncooked as cooking veg will get rid of any essential vitamins.

I don't advise you to feed rice to your rabbit either, as it will expand in their belly and leave them feeling bloated. A small bit of biscuit is okay for your rabbit to eat(: Hope the hub helped!

I got a baby bunny and she loves peas, but I'm not sure yet if they're good for her. I thought being something that you can normally give babies she should be alright.

I gave her some peas yesterday - now she can't get enough of them and even nibbles my fingers if she smells them!

Is it ok to feed her this? They're just boiled and put in the fridge to cool them before feeding.

Also, I'm keeping her inside until she gets her vaccinations and is old enough to handle the weather.

Hi I just got a new bunny and I have many questions but I really want to know is it ok if u feed a young rabbit alfalfa hay or should you feed it timothy hay.I have three more questions my fist one is my rabbit eats a lot of pellets and only a little bit of fruits and veggies and the only way I could get it to eat its fruits is if I take away the pellets. Is torn up cardboard boxes ok for your rabbits bedding. My last question is I heard if water gets in your rabbits ear it is fatal is it true.

Thanks for all your help and you are extremely smart and kind plus you are helping rabbit owners help keep there rabbits healthy!!!

Thanks again'

i dun have any questions, just chanced upon this website when i wanted to find out if my bunny can have cucumber.. If more people will just try to read (ctr f to find the specific word in this page!) instead of blindly asking questions, you could save Nishacee97 some time in repeating all the replies.

anyway, thumbs up to Nishacee97 for being so patient with everyone. i've been a bunny owner for years, and i still learnt something here.. Thanks!

I just wanted to say, that I am soo glad that you have answered everyones questions, it has helped me a lot, and has answered almost everyone of my questions. You diserve a reward for being so generous and taking time out of your life to help us rabbit owners :) Also, I was wondering if you knew anything about Lion head rabbits, because I read they seizures are VERY common in them, and Ive never owned any other kind of rabbit so i don't know weather rabbits normally twitch, and get a burst of energy and just run across the room. Is it because they are scared? or are they seizures? I cant bring them to a vet because the closest one to me is 10 hours away and i don't have a car? is there anything you can do to help? or any Vets recommended in the St.Lawrence County area? Thank you :)

my newest bunny is about 3 months now, and I am finding her night droppings in the hutch all the time now.

I have fresh hay in there cage every day, I feed them (my older bunny is 7 months and he is ok) Carrot, Bok Choi or Pak choi, An apple (between the 2 of them) and pellets, and a small amount of brocolli,

I am getting concerned, I have already taken her to the vet about 2 weeks ago when she stopped eating, and I force fed her Hay which helped and I nursed her back to health. She pooed out a BIG clump of hairy poo. and then she was fine and back to her normal self.

But now all the night droppings are occuring,

Please give me some suggestions.

Thanks

I have a bunny who was neglected by his previous owner (his cage was really dirty).

My mom had bought a house for the bunny, but when she put it in, he tried to get it out, and when he couldn't get it out, he started to eat it.

So each time I try to put something new in his cage, he tries to get it out or eat it.

Is this because he was neglected?

Answer A.S.A.P!

i got my bunny from petland, i was wondering if its a good place to get it from? shes very sweet and loves food. how big will she get? because the things that your saying sounds like a lot (plant wise) and its still sorta small. Also...do bunnis bite? she wont stop sniffing my hand, but im afraid shell bite me if she thinks my figers are food, even if I do wash my hands before I pick her up.

Nishacee97 profile image

Nishacee97 4 years ago from Wales. Author

Shannan: it depends how much eye discharge she has? If its a little then it's nothing to worry about. On the other hand, if there is quite a lot of discharge then maybe your bunny is suffering from and eye infection? If you're worried, then the best thing to do is take him to the vets. Hope the hub helped!

Nishacee97 profile image

Nishacee97 4 years ago from Wales. Author

Talisha: one of my rabbits is the same! All I do is get something that doesn't contain dust in the cage so she can still dig. And also I put plenty of other things in the cage to keep her occupied which does stop the amount she digs. Hope the hub helped!

Nishacee97 profile image

Nishacee97 4 years ago from Wales. Author

Roxi1000: if the rabbits look healthy and there's good feedback from petland. It depends what breed of rabbit she is. It depends with rabbits. Some bite some don't. You will never really find out unless you keep your finger there and see what she does.. Not a good plan but it's the only way you'll find out. Not many bunnies bite unless your fingers smell like food so don't be too worried. Hope the hub helped!

Let him run around in a bunny proof room(no loose wires or harmful things he may chew) or in the garden(only if the fence is secure) or if you don't want him loose you could get a run(small cage with no floor so you can place it on grass) and one more alternative is a harness and lead.. I know it sounds stupid but you could walk with your bunny just around the garden or house. It's a good way to keep an eye on your bunny.

can rabbits eat red peppers?

Kass 4 years ago

Are you frickin kidding me, a rabbit CAN NOT eat an orange peel!!!! First off it has pesticides on it and a rabbit can't digest the peel, the orange is alright without the seeds but should only be given as a treat. A rabbit can eat lettuce such as romaine but shouldn't eat iceburg lettuce because it can give them diarhea and is bad for them. You can give rabbits dandelion greens (just the leaves, not the stems) Make sure that any greens that you get outside such as, dandelion greens and frest cut grass, that they don't have pesticides or weed killer on it, because it can be fatal to your bunny. If your bunny is having diarreha, it could be that he isn't getting enough fiber in his diet to digest the greens you are giving him. To see if it is the veggies are causing the problem or a certain veggie, take away the veggies and feed him more hay and things that have a lot of fiber in it, and his diarrahea should go away, if it doesn't take him to a vet right away because rabbits can go downhill really fast!!

sporaticdamage 4 years ago

My daughter's rabbit died today. He was a flop-ear and only 2-3 months old. He was very lively and playful yesterday, but when I awoke this morning, I thought he was dead. When I went to retrieve him, he got up to try to run, which he never did before because he knew us, he seemed to not be able to walk on either left legs. Two hours later I was holding him because I knew he was dying and I didn't want him to die alone. He then let out two screams because he was in pain. My daughter couldn't take it and ran out of the house....we were both in tears and I grew up on a farm and I am used to tragedies. A couple of minutes later he was gone. What happened? Why was the rabbit that was so full of energy the day before all of a sudden not be able to walk and then die in such a painful manner? I had given him some strawberries the day before, and my daughter not knowing what I did, gave him more. Did I kill my daughters rabbit? If I did, don't sugar-coat your answer. I want to learn from my mistakes if my daughter decides to get another. This was a very disturbing experience.

M.T,

No. Green beans are generally considered to be bad for bunnies because they can cause problems with gas and they are too high is sugar. Overall, best avoided.

mitchbells_25,

Not a good idea. Soft foods like this don't suit the constantly growing teeth of a rabbit, which need to be worn down by gnawing on hard foods. Think of rabbits in the wild: they eat only uncooked vegetable matter, with a great deal of fibre.

I found a white rabbit at my school the other day, and i took it home with me. I gave it lots of baby carrots and it ate the whole bag within 2-3 days, and i also gave it plenty of lettuce, though i don't know what kind of lettuce it was. It seems fine and healthy to me, so I guess the it got past the lettuce. So, what is the best food to give my bunny besides pellets? I've been giving it grass and celery, but what weeds/plants can it eat? I've heard you can feed it leaves, but i'm not so sure... Help?

Can my rabbit eat cake and cheese because it loves it

One of my rabbits found an apple core that must've fallen out the bin. Pretty certain it had some apple seeds in it. Heard a munching behind me while I was sleeping, woke up to discover my husband let the bunnies loose and were now snacking on the 3-day old apple core. Luckily they haven't suffered any poisoning as result but it sure made me worry.

They also like the canary seed I noticed. We have a huge sack of it upstairs with some dried egg food mixed into it. Today heard a rustling in the room and found a rabbit half-buried into the sack munching on the seed.

Two (2) Questions, please. I feed my Bunny fresh vegetables every day, and Timothy Hay and Pellets are available as needed. I also give him - in addition to filtered/fresh water every day - some vegetable stock (liquid) that I prepare from vegetable cut-off's (No Potatoes/starch items). I thought, if I were a Bunny, I'd like something OTHER THAN water all the time. NO SALT IS EVER ADDED! Vegetables are boiled down for two (2) hours, allowed to cool overnight and then strained for use. He loves it! What's your opinion on the use of vegetable stock in addition to fresh water? Secondly, our Bunny demonstrates VERY GOOD potty habits, hardly ever making a mistake; however, WHEREVER he eats Timothy Hay....that's where he goes. He NEVER makes it to the litter box. Ever heard of that? We subsequently hung the "hay bin" adjacent to the litter box to control this, and thus far it seems to be working.

Chantel...Although rabbits like and will eat broccoli and cauliflower, you should not feed it to them. Broccoli and cauliflower cause gas. Rabbits cannot pass gas. The gas builds up inside of them and they can die from this. This is called GI Stasis :)

Can too much apple or celery make the rabbit have red pee.

Sara 3 years ago

I actually heard that rabbits cannot eat broccoli because it makes them have gas, and they cannot have gas, it's impossible. I have heard that you can too, but I'm not taking any risks.

Andrea 2 years ago

my rabbits eats potatoes all the time and they love them. every time I peel potatoes they come up to me and start licking my hands and try to eat the already peeled potatoes. I cut one in small pieces one day and they had a field day with them. I only give them potatoes once in awhile. I give them the whole thing (without the peel) they are fine. I also give them Sweet potatoes as well and do the same thing I did with the regular potatoes. They love them. sometimes I have to mix the potatoes with their food or they will not eat it. I know it says its bad for them but im not going to change their diet. I read on other websites you can give them potatoes just not every day and not to much. if you know how I can get them to stop liking potatoes please tell me. thank you.

Andrea 2 years ago

if you can email me with advice on how to get them to stop eating potatoes. also when I said I have to mix potatoes in their food or they wont eat it I meant they wont eat their food unless there is some potatoes in it. I bought food that looks like there is potatoes, but that doesn't help at all. Here's my email acogle2013@jamesrumsey.net. thank you
