He may be heading the world's largest economy, but US President Barack Obama's personal net worth is just $ 5 million: the lowest for any American President in five decades.

The last time a US President had a lower net worth than Obama was Harry Truman (1945-53) with less than $ one million, says a list compiled by The Atlantic magazine.

what do u guys this about this news piece?

What do I say about it?

I say he should put his money where his mouth is and SHARE THE WEALTH.  Isn't it our money anyway?  Teehee.  I could use some of it from the great compassionate one! wink

But that would be Communism and you wouldn't like that would you?
Or is it only good when it benefits you?

Communism is never good as a style of government, but if someone is going to espouse the benefits of it, they ought to be willing to live it, no?

Personally, I don't think politicians should be paid at all. If they are interested in "service", then they should be willing to do it for free. They should serve out of a sense of duty, and they should do so reluctantly presumably because they have other things to do that are more enjoyable and enriching. They should also limit their time of service for the same reason as well as to introduce new blood, new ideas, and to give others a chance to preserve the union. They should not be allowed to profit from their service either, writing books about their experiences in a job they were elected to by the people, for the people. I'd like to know, when did service to the nation become a career? That was the first mistake, Barring that one should be allowed to make as much money as one wishes.

Well then you would get a President who was not in it for the money - meaning he already had sh*****ds and you get exactly the same thing - it is more telling that EVERY President was a rich man - what happened to ruling by the people for the people, when did that change to ruling by my rich buddies for my rich buddies ?

Right, it's sad that practically any politician has to be wealthy to get elected - even at the state level, usually!

His income from his book sale last year alone was $5.5 million.  He did pay tax on that.  But these numbers here are incorrect.

And now Obama will never have to work again, have access to 24/7 security.  A full pension, etc.

No worries ahead for him at all.

So what exactly is the point of this post?  The guy pulled in 6x just last year what the average guy will make in a lifetime.

He's not rich?  Can someone explain how that makes him NOT rich?

Not his in particular, but definitely the federal government's. Your income is monitored through the IRS and soon your health will be monitored as well.

You don't make sense. Obama's salary is public knowledge for being the President of the United States. What he "earns" outside of that, really is for public knowledge and should not be.

It simply goes to show the foolishness going on in America. Too many people sticking their noses where they need not be. It's pathetic. hmm

I agree especially when they're voting themselves pay raises and such. When a person runs for public office his net worth is part of how the system keeps an accurate check and balance on his dealings in the Federal and private sectors.

Imagine if he were taking payoffs or something...wouldn't you want to know where the money came from?

    1. Cagsil profile image72

If he was receiving payoffs....what makes you think there would be a trail for the money? Ever heard of "cash"? It's untraceable.

I'm amazed that all of your other Presidents for so long have been richer than that. It seems worrying that only rich people are making it to the top of politics.

Having said that our new Prime Minister in the UK is pretty rich, went to Eton(probably the poshest fee paying school in the world), and is related to the Queen. I still quite like him though, so far.

Rich people, millionaires, will have no time to analyse public issues. All their time are spent on how to safeguard their million.  Only people like Obama can find time to look into public issues.
