I'm wondering if it usually is genetic.

What can I do to avoid it?

As far as I know there is no familial link with diabetes Type 1, but there could be a predisposition to developing diabetes type 2. Type 2 is adult onset diabetes.
Be very careful with your carbohydrate intake, and exercise more. Until medical science can pin it all down to one substance, just take extra care to not allow yourself to get overweight smile

Unfortunately it is. You may want to be with them in this time.
And learn how to adjust your lifestyle and your nutritional
habits. Avoid butters/margarines. Consider 0 calorie butter
sprays and 0 calorie cooking sprays. If you eat vegetables
consider microwaving them in a big microwavable bowl. And, only
buy the vegetables in the your groceries freezer in those
generic bags. You may want to invest in all high fiber
vegetables. And consider "Cholest off" tablets. Never eat a bed time snack, that can turn into fat. Always look at the
ingredients on your food label. Making the lower section higher than the top. Such as fiber, protein,.  Keeping the fats in the single digits.

It is genetic and there is a big chance that you can receive if you don't take care of yourself by exercising and eating healthy. My family has a history of diabetes and I am trying my best to avoid it myself.. I wrote a hub on this topic..

Eating lots of these.. with low fat dressings, no eggs
and no croutons. However, if you like eggbeaters. Great.
Also, lean meats like turkey, chicken, fish. Just avoid
frying them. Thats where your meals turn deadly,.

With all due respect.. that is a little more than an opinion..
that is how you get healthy. Avoiding: cooking in oils, not
using butters or margarines that has loads of fats and calories.
Same with cooking oils. Along with changing your routined
exercising.. walking lengthy walks, dancing for close to an
          hour,.

Thinking about answering your thread got me to write a Hub.  I'm just finishing it up now.  (Thanks for "inspiration". I hope the Hub answers your question too.   smile  )

And when you have done all those things you may still get diabetes. The only way to ensure that you are not on the path to diabetes is to monitor your blood-glucose levels and your cholesterol levels regularly. This can be done with monitor and test kits that are used by those with diabetes. Everybody should use them as, if you are predisposed to diabetes, at least you can tell at the onset. Your medical team can then ensure that the diabetes is controlled before it is too late.
I do know what I am talking about as I am a diabetic that went undiagnosed (with rapid onset type 2 diabetes) now thought to have been caused by damaging my pancreas whilst exercising / weight training. I was in a diabetic coma less than a month after I had blood tests showing that I did not have high blood-glucose levels.
I too have written a number of hubs on this subject.

type 1 diabetes is acquired by genes while type 2 is acquired through lifestyle. since you know that you have a family history of diabetes, you have to watch what you eat. exercise, diet, fiber rich foods are essential for your health.
