   The Nations largest employer.  And what exactly does the Federal Government make?  And who pays these salaries?

      The federal government provides the ever-needed service of demanding money from you at the threat of jail or murder.
      
      Without this quintessential service, life would be horrible.

      Without thinking too hard they inspect food to make sure it is safe, track epidemics and acquire supplies of vaccine, investigate terrorist threats and all federal crimes like child traffisking, run elections to keep the country a democracy I am pretty sure there is a lot more.  Do you think making widgets is more important than hunting pedophiles?

   Mike, if they are the largest pool of the nation's employed then aren't they paying their own salaries, to a large part?
   
   In California our largest employers are the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the State of California..
   
   Our job base was shipped out or outsourced through technological developments.....In Los Angeles we live in a fragmented social/political/economic landscape created by the hybridization of government and business interests...business has left leaving government to take care of the population they both created....
   
   They are paying their own salaries through their own taxable incomes...

   Of course we could lower the standards and hire HS dropouts in the FBI for MUCH less....
   
   You get what you pay for. If you don't want to pay your share of taxes, go to Somalia. They have no government, no taxes and piracy is the major industry. But watch your back. Everyone is a predator or target or both.

   All government is a burden, no matter the philosophy, no matter the party.The purpose of government is control, through force, over resources. Government is a consumer, of wealth, of labor, and of freedom. The only real benefit is order and security, though both can be achieved without government. In the USA the reason for the existence of government is to maintain freedom. How much is that worth to you?
   It's hard to put a price on it, but clearly the government is doing much, much more than was intended and it's costing us much, much more than it should.

   I don't know about the rest of the Federal work force but I can tell you this.  Being in law enforcement for the past 25 years, we are never going to get rich.  That's not why we do the job.  We believe in something and dedicate our lives to it.  The pay sucks.  The hours suck.  The working conditions suck.  The clientele sucks.  We do have one benefit most workers don't.  If we're killed on the job our employer covers our burial expenses.

   What I find alarming about the recent large increases in the Government workforce, is that with more Americans being employed by the Government, there is government interest in each person and each person has a stake in keeping their job, which in my opinion brings in to play, the Government's hand of persuation, and it also brings into play more dependancy for many American's on the Government. Eventually, it also increases the future of entitlements and these types of programs are already failing..I sense socialism, and large Government, and intrusion, coersion, and loss of freedoms..

   Remember the snowstorm in DC this year.  All non essential government employees were not required to come to work.
   
   If they are "non essential" maybe they never have to come to work.  I mean what is the point of paying employees who are by definition Non Essential?

   Who said a part made the whole?
   
   However, if you look at the labor pool of California, I think you will find that it is government workers, directly and indirectly, that pay the taxes that pay salaries...
   
   Beyond looking at city, county, state, and federal workers in civilian roles, let us also remember the men and women in the military who, without their bases and steady income, towns across this nation would disappear, and cities and regions would be severely impacted....without those forces many businesses, whether providing physicists or garment tailorrs...selling shoes or rifle rounds/military equipment, would be out of work..
   
   Without that 500 billion dollar defense budget....how many private industries would be around?
