Jeff apparently A County doesn't agree with your misguided concept of swearing on the bible since they did it for years "You Swear To Tell The Whole Truth And Nothing But The Truth So Thank You GOD!"
Isn't it "I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God"?
And you can get in a lot more trouble a lot sooner than death by lying in a courtroom. And just swearing on a bible does not guarantee that person will tell the truth. Just because something has been done for years does not give it some kind of moral authority. Maybe a hundred years ago it did, but not any more. I think more people are worried about what will happen to them legally than what price they might pay after death. It's getting harder and harder to lie on the stand due to DNA and other advances.
And people do not have to swear on a bible any more. If I was called as a witness in a trial I probably would not swear on a bible. However, I would tell the truth because perjury is a crime and I could go to jail.
This is how it works in Canada:
"Usually, the court clerk will read out the oath and ask you to swear (promise) to tell the truth on a Bible. You don't have to swear on the Bible. There are other oaths for other religions. If you are not religious, tell the court that you want to affirm, which means you'll promise to tell the truth."
Which County? Wait, it doesn't matter which County. Because you have missed the point in pretty much every way possible.
I have never said that people don't swear on the Bible. They do. All the time.
What I did say, and what is the case, is this: when testifying in court, you do not have to swear on the Bible, or to God, if you don't want to.
There's no law against it, and most people do it, but there's no law that makes them.

Yes, Professor, I agree.
Hi friends
I think the countries, whether Saudi Arabia or America should not be classified under the name of any religion as they don't represent the founder or the sripture of the religion in majority or in minority.
Thanks
I am an Ahmadi peaceful Muslim
The common English phrasing for the Golden rule is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
If you do not believe in God or read the bible, you can at lease follow this principle. Makes sense doesn't it? It summarizes the bible in one sentence. If you can follow the golden rule, you are a good person in my view!
America as also all other countries should be secular; not interfering with any religion or discriminating between man and man; treating equally and equitably.

One of the many attacks on our country from the Religious Right is the claim that our country is a Christian Nation...not just that the majority of people are Christians, but that the country itself was founded by Christians, for Christians. However, a little research into American history will...

I America a "Christian Nation"? What does that term even mean?I often here that America is a "Christian Nation". Do you agree or disagree with this? And what, exactly, does that mean? Clearly, not nearly all Americans are Christians. Does this mean that a few of the first...

Is it reasonable to assume that 13 different Christian Chartered Colonies, would send to a convention in Philadelphia a group of men - to make a Constitution - that allowed their way of life to end? Is it further reasonable to believe that those Christians picked only Deists to go represent them?...

What do you think? I'm not gonna argue it, though I may come in later and post my opinion, but I wondered if many people here would agree with that term as an apt description of our country. Additionally she says“Lest anyone try to convince you that God should be separated from the state, our...

Very rarely do I see a forum thread on Islam. I have not seen an atheist who has started a thread on Islam insulting Mohammed or Allah or just speaking out against them. Christianity and Jesus seem to be the target. I know it is because the US, for example, is considered a...
