Do you know someone with dreadlocks?

   And have you ever asked them why they locked their hair? How they clean their locks? Why do some dreadlocks look unkempt?
   For me, locking my hair was one of the most liberating things I've ever done. My locks aren't merely a hairstyle, they've taught me the importance of patience, commitment, natural beauty and freedom. Questions? Please ask ....

      I used to have dreads. Well, I still physically "have" them, just no longer attached to my head. Some people think its gross, but I spent a long time getting them, maintaining them, etc. I want to make a little pillow out of them, but I haven't gotten around to actually stitching the fabric yet.

         Some men have to cut their locks off due to male pattern baldness. For most of the men I talked to with locks; cutting them off is like losing a leg or a piece of your soul. It just depends on weather you have natural locks you twisted yourself or just beauty parlor dreads that look like braids until you get close enough to see the difference. You know the word Dreads are a derogatory term given to locks.  The original term was those dreaded locks. It's what europeans called locks upon first seeing them when they colonized the Islands.

            Yes, I'm aware of the history, I just got into the habit of calling them dreads. Not really sure how it happened. I don't claim to be a Rastafarian or anything, nor did I at the time. I did feel, though, that it was the natural way that my hair would be. I stopped brushing it and just let what would happen happen. From there, I assisted with some shaping and such, but mine are not beauty parlor dreadlocks. They are straight up from my dome with some twisting to maintain. No product or anything. It was much like losing limbs to cut them off. That's why I still have them.

               I kept mine too. But it hurts to look at them. They were so red when the sun would hit them. I really miss that.

   I love dreads...not on me tho...dreads that are done just right and maintained properly - they are the nicest of course.  And...if they are really nice, then having them really long looks great! - u kno - tied back.
   
   I did my daughter's hair in dreads - she wanted them - we figured out how to do them and maintain them, she took good care of them too..and she looked oh so beautiful with them!

   Yeah, I knew a couple people with dreads.  It's a look that goes with a philosophy, I guess.  I asked one guy, and he tried to explain it to me, and I only got a little part of what he was saying.
   
   It's maybe even more an attitude thing than a philosophy, or what I think of as a philosophy. 
   
   PS,this guy's dread didn't look unkempt.  He was a real hunk!

   I have a friend with dreadlocks and they are absolutely beuatiful because they are well maintained and all a regular size.  I always wanted to have mine done but my hair is not strong enough so I would have landed up looking like a porcupine

   I have known several people with them.  Most of them looked great.  A few looked like they had dog poo hanging from their head. 
   
   I think, if I ever live in a tent again, I will dread my hair.  It just seems so much more practical than long loose strands flying everywhere.

   I don't understand the point in dreadlocks and don't see them as very attractive.  Now, after saying that...there are some people who actually look good with dreadlocks.

   I know many, many people with many kinds of dreads, with many types of beliefs.The movement is growing, don't try to label people with Dreads, whether Rastafarian or someone who feels an affinity for the philosophy. One love , one people, one God!
