I really don't understand why US is supporting and getting ready with S.K to go to war with the North.

Let the Koreans fight their own war.

Why send armies to kill and to be killed?

If US can't broker peace. It should stop right there.

Why create more problems and casualties?

I really don't understand on this. The other day the US talks about world peace and now getting ready for war with a country that has nothing to do with them.

Is there anyone who agree with me?

if US forces were not in Korea, it would be one country under a communist dictatorship. South Korea is a democratic nation, the people who live there have the right to pursue their dreams, to be educated, to worship according to the dictates of their own consciences. Do you want to take that away from them?

The very best case outcome would be for the glorious North Korean army to destroy the capitalist American pigs and take over the Western Hemisphere!!

That way we wouldn't have those American's stand up and complain every time a little turd of a dictator oppressed his people or threatened his neighbors!

        A reply from an American:

The U.S. is not going to war with North Korea. We have too much on our plate right now and there is ZERO chance that Obama would commit our military to yet another conflict. We are still fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as supplying aid to numerous countries throughout the world. It won't happen. North Korea is going through some changes as of late and are merely posturing for a stronger position in the world.

The reason why the posturing is necessary is that (this is speculation at this point, but backed by logic) Kim Jong Il is possibly stepping down in 2012 and is having his youngest son take over the country. He wants to set his son up in a position of power and they think this is the best way to do it- blackmail by threatening war.

Wargames are common throughout the world's history and the militaries of many countries.

Been trying to figuring this conflict out for some time and it is weird and hard to understand, because there are so many dynamics, political and ideological views going around. It's a huge mess, just like the times we're living in.
IMPOV, the US must help SK in case of war. However, and knowing the North's way of thinking/acting for several years, they should be careful about this drill.

My Chinese friends here who go to N. Korea regularly, and the students who go on student exchanges, tell me that things in society there are improving - but the food is terrible, and I have to say that the Korean food here is not my favourite by a long shot.

From what I gather N. Koreans are afraid of invasion from the south, a reasonable fear historically, they are afraid of American aggression, a very reasonable fear historically.  Just what about them is America afraid of?

In my opinion the whole US navy excercise thing is to increase tension and pressure on China who will not allow any invasion of N. Korea that gives it a direct border with a western puppet country and all the ongoing trouble and tensions that would cause.

I just wanted to let you know that your post is wrong from the very beginning. You assume that the US will go to war with them when in fact the US is actually at war with north Korea right now. The war never ended. The US and South Korea negotiated a cease fire with North Korea and their Chinese allies, nothing more.

The war is really the last vestige of cold war and the US does have an obligation to stick with south Korea. However, none of the countries involved want open warfare again. Especially China who has backed North Korea all this time. They would like the situation to stay the same as it's always been. If theres a war it would completely destabilize the region and would force China and the US into some sort of conflict whether it be armed or diplomatic. China's economic growth has been huge and conflict would really disrupt china's economy. But China also likes to have North Korea around to pressure and annoy their enemies in Asia (South Korea, Japan, Taiwan) North Korea has also become a diplomatic tool for them, because they are the only country that has any real leverage over them. The US and the South don't want open warfare because again, it would horribly disrupt the economics of the region and probably the whole world.

Read a history book and then you wont be so confused.

I see you are from Japan, if not Japanese, the view from the area is often more clear.  I would guess that the real objective of US pressure on N.Korea is to try to destablise and keep the region separated, any threat of a combined Asian bloc would dwarf the US power worldwide.

I'm actually from the US but I've always tried to look at the world not from the perspective of an american/westerner but just as observer of history. It's hard to do because we are all products of our environment to some extent but it's at least something I strive for.

I can't believe that you think Asians would ever unite. The major players in Asia all dislike each other to put it mildly.  There are thousands of years of distrust as well as notions of racial and cultural superiority between all the powerful Asian nations. A united Asia is something America would never be afraid of. A powerful China is however. But the thing I see happening with both the US and China is that diplomacy is improving and economic ties are incredibly strong (the Japanese have been a little miffed about this lately). Both countries don't want anything to happen in regards to Korea because it would disrupt things so much. Same goes for Japan. Sure Japan hates North Korea but, they don't want to see conflict. For now the cease fire has served all sides well except for the poor north Korean people. While everyone else is using them for power plays and diplomatic games (including their own government), they get the short end of the stick.

One more thing that you should think about though which kind of flies in the face of your idea about the US employing pressure in order to destabilize, is that the US is actually drawing down it's forces on the Korean peninsula and there are talks of some US forces withdrawing from Japan too. There will still be US forces but it will be much smaller than what has traditionally been placed there. The US is willing to give up influence in the Region, kind of going against the notion you put forward.

Anyway. That's my take. I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert and I know what I'm talking about. Who knows what any of the countries involved think. As governments shift and politicians come in and out of power so to do their agendas, fears, and strategies. Thus it is hard to say who is right and wrong at point in time. It's fun to think about and try to understand regardless.

I like to meet people here who know what they are talking about smile  I am not sure that the fact that the US is reducing its armed forces in the area is an indication of their giving up influence, I would say the region is bending in favour of their reduced presence.  Also I don't think anyone perceives China as a military threat particularly and they are the biggest player in Asia now.

I am not so sure about your reading of how Asians are not likely to unite as a bloc - they seem to be much more pragmatic than emotional and working together does not need anyone to be in love - look at most marriages big_smile

Did y'all hear France declared war on the Taliban? Or it might be al-Quaeda. One of the two.

In either case, the French will end up surrendering to Germany.

Even if both Koreas unite, it will be a very small country for the US to deal with.  Taking on very small countries, defeat them and shout that they won the war has no meaning at all. War should be among equals. Doing mischiefs in small countries and later cry that terrorists are targeting US looks like a joke.

US can go to war with Korea. But Korea has no other way except encourage terrorism against US.

If there is enough money with the US, let them repay the debts due to China. With so much debts in one corner, why this unnecessary expensive adventurism?

The humor in here is great.  It would be so wonderful if some humor could handle it...or at least help get things into perspective.  Mankind rattling sabres at mankind is getting a little old.

As for Canada, there is nothing the US can do about us, we are bigger and we are on top!

The question is--what action will countries in the region take if the North Korean government collapses? This will lead to a power struggle to achieve dominance in the region. The players are China, US, South Korea, and Japan. War is not out of the question. A scary thought. Peace in East Asia depends on how the North Korea situation is handled.

The fate of a nation and its people can never be determined by others, that too, by USA, which is thousands of miles away. North Korean Govt will not collapse, and it is not a federation of 50 states to collapse. It is a homogeneous country, all people united. Its people are united, disciplined and law-abiding. They are not gangsters.

China and Russia will never let it fall. On the contrary, there is every possibility that South Korea will go the South Vietnam way.
