I don't think that Google is greatly concerned by the existance of Facebook, otherwise it wouldn't have handed it a PageRank 10.

Wikipedia, on the other hand, has been demoted to a PageRank 9 wink Its a little like discussing whether bread sales can beat coca-cola sales, two completely different products and markets.

Google attempted the Social Networking battle with Orkut, and lost to Facebook, that is the end of the battle as far as I am concerned.

    Popularity ?

You can search Porn, warez and torrents easily on google but try to find it under face-book and compare the results. Oops wink

With a half billion person user base, I can't see Google coming in a taking down Facebook in the social network space. The thing is, Google seems to have smarter people working for them than Facebook, and I base that on my experiences dealing with both companies.

Facebook was started by a cocky smart-ass college student, and it's still run that way. They sell out their users private info and then act like they didn't realize that was a problem. When questioned about privacy issues, the founder looked like he was going to cry. He should turn over control to people who know how to run a business this large.

Google innovates at an astonishing rate, which is why they didn't go the way of Dogpile, Askjeeves, Alta Vista, Excite or Lycos. They are always trying to add new features and trash the features that nobody cares about. Facebook, on the other hand, makes minor tweaks and all of its users complain. Some of the most successful Facebook-related products were actually made by third party developers, such as Farmville. If anyone can take down Facebook the way Facebook took down MySpace (which had a head start of several years and tens of millions of users) it's Google, but I think for the near future Facebook will continue to dominate the social networks and Google will control search, targeted advertising, maps, video, images and just about everything else.
