   "Tony and Julia want to turn this country into an insular, isolated, boat-rejecting, immigration-slashing, closed-bordered, closed-minded bastion of fortified rackkoffff-ness, and I think that's an excellent thing. I'm fully behind them, if only to keep out the Canadians. I've got no problem with refugees coming here from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kiwistan, but something must be done to curb the influx of Canadastanis flowing across our borders like thick insidious maple syrup smothering a helpless little butterball atop a compassionate pancake short-stack."

      Well it is as funny is a hat full of wombats backsides for starters!
      The truth is in there though. Both the labour party (Julia Gillard who just usurped the old Prime Minister Kevin 07 Rudd) And the Liberal coalition with Tony (The mad monk) Abbot (think Abbot and Costello) are both cooing to the rednecks about keeping out those refugees.
      After all, they may want food and shelter, so let's make it hell for them....  like John Howard ( The previous Liberal Prime Minister who got chucked out for lying to us about both refugees and the Iraq war) did.
      
      Yep there is truth and wit in this!
      Australians like an open free society, and we "go of crook" or respond with humour when pollies get to uppity!

         In my haste I was, talking to you, I mistakenly took the comment as your own,no, I hadn't read the article before I posted, please accept my apology. I have since read that article and had a chuckle, it sounds like a bit of aussie humor. Australia was built on migration, as most western civilizations were, and I don't agree with some of the proposed policies touted by our politicians relating to immigration, it's all a ridiculous scare campaign aimed at the increase in refugee influx to the country by boat, aided by unscrupulous people smugglers. Thanks for drawing my attention to this.

   Frankly, his article is full of propaganda crap, and if he was the son of an immigrant Canadian, he would have his facts correct.  He sounds like he has Canadian-envy.    Not only that, considering Australia and Canada are BOTH commonwealth countries, I call it ironic that he would attack Canadians in a negative light.  Isn't he the foreigner since he's not native Autralian?  Maybe Australia should toss him back over the sea to Canada....but wait, we wouldn't want anyone who's not open to be Canadian.  Maybe he should have some REAL maple syrup to sweeten him up a bit.

   The land Australians now live was not won by the power of swords from the native Australians. Using their ignorance of outer world, they killed or drove them out and inhabited their lands.  That land was bestowed upon the so-called Australians or inhabitants by God. Let it be useful to others also. There is also no scarcity of land there. Genuine settlers can be allowed to migrate to Australia.

   Americans have the perception that their land is theirs, and now Australia is growing the sentiment.  But like Venugopal Sivagnia was saying, these two powerhouses were founded by IMMIGRANTS settling into someone else's territory, and now they are complaining because it is happening again........, Go figure!

      When the original immigration took place centuries ago in Canada,  Australia and other places, it was not orderly and no government existed in those lands.  That cannot be compared with the present immigration.
      
      This is immigration and that was "settlement".  Present immigrants go for employment only.  Previous immigrants first settled there and created livelihood.  No one invited them in those lands and  no one was there to employ them. Today's things are entirely different.

   Is this article a spoof? It just reads like parody or satire to me.
   
   I guess that Americans, and possibly Canadians, wouldn't be able to understand some of the underlying humour in an Australians writing... as a Brit... that article just makes me laugh
   
   Perhaps this just further emphasises the joke. The joke really is on North Americans for taking themselves too god damn seriously. If I started a forum thread each time I read a bit of British v Australian banter then I wouldn't be able to write any hubpages whilst The Ashes was being played (thats cricket by the way).
   
   I want Darkside's take on this... to me the article is just a laugh. And very well written too.

      It is just the usual newspaper type article, as the issue of boat people, is a hot political potato whilst we are in the middle of a Election campaign.
      
      Yup, just another taking the piss write up. As most folk not of Aussie/Kiwi/Pommie attribute would not get that with some of our newspaper articles.

      I don't think it is a spoof. It reads very much like an article in response to comments made by Australia's political leaders. I was interested in finding out what those comments were about and how they are perceived by the Aussies. Yes, I do see the humor, but that really wasn't the point here.

   I never considered measuring maple syrup in the terms of alcohol -- it's always been amber, light amber or dark amber.  Maybe they water it down down there?!?

    Now that's a funny article.  I laughed out loud as I read it - thanks, Beelzedad.  Even the comments, excepting one, fell right into line and were almost as good as the article itself.
    
    What terrible people the Canucks must be - the author really should be isolated with the only other refugee there.

    Any Aussies that aren't in agreement with giving the boot to the Canucks can come here.  We've got plenty of space for them and they liven the place up and better still - the one's that have moved here like hockey just as much as we do.  We have plenty of casinos on the Westcoast, and we promise to make them feel right at home. 
    
    I wonder how we would react if a freighter full of Aussies showed up on our shores rather than one crammed to the gunnels with Sri Lankans. It would most likely be one big party

    I think it's terrible the way the Australians have picked on the Canadians.  The Canadians should invade Australia.  We Americans support our Canadian cousins. The Canadians can take over Australia and don't worry about the land you left behind, it was too cold for you guys anyway.  We'll take care of it.
