Today I was talking to my brother and he was very upset with the ICC list which doesn't include the Highest scoring Batsman Tendulkar followed by Lara not being in the Top 20. I just wanted to seek the opinion of others on this issue.

Any list about cricket that does not include Sachin Tendulkar cannot be taken seriously. Period.  How can you ignore a cricketer who started playing when he was 16 year old (That was in 1989, btw), has played in 5 world cups, has amassed more than 20,000 runs, taken hundreds of wickets, is amongst the best fielders in any position, and done all this at a very fast clip! And to top it all, the man has not been embroiled in ANY controversy and keeps an amazingly well-balanced head atop his shoulders! Those who understand cricket and its place in India, will vouch that it is something which cannot be said about any other cricketer.

What is amazing is that even Brian Lara who has the highest test and one day score is also not mentioned in the list. My brother feels upset and confused about the parameters employed to calculate this list.

As a matter of fact, CW, it is Tendulkar, and not Lara, who is the highest run getter in BOTH forms of cricket. (Lara: 11953 in 131 tests and T'kar: 12429 in 156 tests. For One dayers, Lara 10405 runs in 299 matches and T'kar 16422 runs in 419 matches)

There are a lot of other statistics that one can quote. Even these cursory numbers tell you the fact as it is: here are two of the greatest players in the OVERALL history of cricket, and they have somehow not found a mention in the Top 20 of ICC list. This means only one thing: the list is meaningless.

As for the parameters of the ranking, as per ICC, it considers such factors such as "consistency" and "excellent form over a prolonged period". What is clear that if they had really assessed on these parameters, T'kar and Lara would have definitely figured in the top 5.

I think you mistook my earlier statement. I know that the overall record in both forms of Cricket is held by Tendulkar. But for highest individual scores like 400 in Tests and 501 in First Class Cricket is held by Lara. Yes I don't know the rationale for this assessment. It is not a 100 metres running race in which one flash in the pan performance  should be judged as the best in the all time list. I just read "ICC forced to backtrack on all-time player rankings": big_smile http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/ci-icc/ … 86600.html

Paraglider- Thanks for posting that link. Ganguly&Kumble have already retired and others like Tendulkar, VVS Laxman & Rahul Dravid are almost in the twilight of there careers. I hope SiddSingh writes a hub if not then I will attempt. big_smile
