Is it OK to leave a comment up that has bad language and personal attacks?
It obviously came from a humorless person, who didn't understand my metrics hub, so I invited them to join Hubpages and have fun in the forums.

I would say that it is up to you. If the staff of Hub Pages lets it go, and your ok with it, why not leave it?

i never allow those kinds of comments on my hubs. i work hard on my hubs and don't appreciate people leaving nasty comments just for nasty-comment-leaving's sake. i do, however, permit opposing viewpoints, especially on sociological topics, as long as they are expressed in a respectful manner.

    Hey Rochelle,

If the person is humorless about your hub and left a comment that is a personal attack? Then, why offer them to become part of the forum community, which they would obviously get banned from, and even remotely on a permanent basis.

Thus, they will have opened an account and probably never write anything. hmm

    Just a thought.

I know. And since the comment did not come from someone who was signed in, I really don't care what they do,if they happen to come back.
My feelings were not hurt-- I thought it was kind of funny.

Amusing. Yes, most people who leave comments and attack writers, that are not members, usually are funny. lol

I thought that was your sense of humor poking through the question. I think you're rather clever to invite them to join hubpages and see how short a time span it takes for them to be banned. That's hilarious.

You might go back and advise them to write hubs that people could respond to in the religion and politics forums. That might speed the process a bit.

        You twisted, twisted sister.

        lol

Rochelle, you do not have to leave comments on your hubs.  Delete it and flag the source for hubpages staff.

I know I can do that. I just thought that leaving it would make them look silly.

  4. secularist10 profile image60

Personally, I would say it depends. If they use some curse words in the context of making a (more or less legitimate) point, I would be fine with that, although I almost never use curses in my writing. If they throw in some personal attacks in addition to that, I would not like that, but I would be hesitant to delete that comment, again assuming it had some legitimate points.

If the comment was really vicious, with absolutely no redeeming value or contribution to the discussion, then I would delete it.

But otherwise I try to be as libertarian as possible with my hubs, because the whole idea (for me, anyway) is to facilitate discussion as much as possible.

Also, if someone left a comment on one of my hubs that said nothing but "secularist10, you're an idiot," I would not delete that, but would allow it for all the world to see the total inability to respond rationally to my article. If the viciousness was directed at another commenter, not me, then I would feel more of an obligation to delete it.

This topic caught my eye because a comment I left today on a hub about God and atheism was just deleted. There were no bad words, no personal attacks, in fact I tried to be quite respectful. That, to me, is an example of someone shutting down/ censoring the conversation because they can't win the argument, or they're just annoyed. Nothing more. It's pretty pathetic, really.

I agree with everything you said.
I think I'll leave it for now, even though there was nothing redeeming about it that I could see-- and the attacks were only toward me -- and the metric system.

Looking at your hubtivity, I see a recent "unapproved comment". Do they possibly have their settings set so that they must approve all comments before they show?  It may be that they just haven't read it yet to approve it.  I wouldn't assume they deliberately disapproved it unless you know for sure.

      1. secularist10 profile image60
secularist10posted 13 years agoin reply to this

        Nope.

I agree, I wouldn't say that unless I knew for sure. But in this case I do because the comment showed immediately upon my posting it. Later on, she removed it. Otherwise, I enjoy conversing with her, although we disagree. But unwarranted censorship just rubs me the wrong way.

IMO, there's no point in having someone's foul attitude mar your hub. It doesn't matter if they make themselves look foolish - it only detracts from the value of your hub.

    Don't give cretins the satisfaction.

The best thing to do is with these anonymous commentors on our hubs, is to just imagine they have an arse for a face, because they sure as hell don't want to show who they are....I bet they got a right bubble butt or something or maybe too hairy or too cheeky and they stink......yeah them commentors are arsefaces!!!!!!

I have deleted comments in the past that were aimed at personally attacking another hubber.  I found it offensive, rude, and just stupid.  The comment was just an attack at another person, complete with foul language.  It contributed nothing.  Say what you want about me...I'm the one who wrote the Hub, but don't senselessly attack others because they don't agree with you.  No need for that.  A discussion on issues can spark heated feelings, but that doesn't mean that people need to resort to foul language and name calling.

I agree with cosette.  I delete any comments that I consider spam, and anything that I do not think belongs on a hub.  That does not include opposing viewpoints.  A valid discussion is fine.  I just do not believe that people need to be nasty.

good on you Rochelle. why give people like that any press at all? if they have nothing to offer but nastiness, let them keep it to themselves.

If someone disagrees with a viewpoint then it's fine to disagree, but to attack someone personally and leave nasty vulgar comments, is way out of line and totally unacceptable. By all means certainly share your disagreements by commenting in a courteous manner but don't affront someone's personal character because of their opinions.

well i did receive one not so nice comment..it was rude ..but i still allowed it since being a hubber ,all kinds of views must be accepted...yes if it would have had some slang i would have denied it...

Rochelle, I found and read the Hub and some of the comments before you deleted the one discussed here.  The Hub is great!  I thought that the comment-in-question was pretty stupid and did show the commenter for what s/he was.  But since it was anonymous, there was no way of knowing who would deserve the opinion one would form of them.  Since it really did nothing to contribute to the Hub in any way at all, I believe you did the right thing by removing it.

I got one this morning, of course from a religious flake who thinks Biblical prophecy is warning  us against Obama and the evils of Democrats.  He says I am an idiot  - I think being called an idiot by someone who thinks what he thinks is actually a good sign that I am not.
