If the Jesus of the New Testament gospels were living in the United States today, what political party would he support? Why?

I think he'd probably be more interested in healing the sick, housing the homeless, clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, and getting everyone to be nice to each other than he would be in national politics.

      Just a guess.

So we'll put you down as "Jesus would have been a Democrat".

No, if he was a democrat he would want to tax everyone for his good deeds.

      Well, that's a catchy question.

All I'll say is that the Republican Party is the only one whose Platform lists the values Jesus taught.

As often as I vote republican Brenda because of the very reason you stated, the fact of the matter is that they don't practice what they preach most of the time. It's lip service to get votes. The platform is  there to create an appealing platform to the religious, and/or Christian sect. I see in their voting that they are inconsistent and self serving, just like the democrats. See my post below.

I'm certain he wouldn't live in the US, and looking at his teachings, he leaned more liberal than conservative.  he had a rather radical outlook on how to treat enemies.

love your enemies and do good to those who hate us and oppose..

      turn the other cheek.

give to those in need not expecting anything back

to have a generous attitude towards property and possessions, lending freely.

he separated church from state. render to Caesar that which is Ceasar, unto God that which is Gods.

he was not conservative. I think he taught more peacemaking through non-violence and economic justice.

he probably wouldn't have anything to do with any party affiliation.

What a great question! I'm not sure he would support any party actively, but he definitely has liberal/democrat leanings. There's no way on earth he'd be a republican!

You should make up signs with your comments about Christians and their scriptures and walk down the streets of any town or city in the US. You will quickly find that your comments do not show anything that is considered peaceful. smile

Jesus was not interested in politics then and I am sure he isn't now. But lets say he was, i would say he would be more Socialist, as he would be Socially minded offering free health care like in Canada, free education like in Germany etc. So that all people could get what they need.,

Having already been taken to task once today for applying modern political terms to historical events that occurred long before such terms were invented, I'm hesitant to respond.
    But I will anyway big_smile

    He would not be American.
Or if he was, he'd be in one of our peace-loving territories like Samoa...

As Jesus's official spokesman I can give a definitive answer on his behalf. The words you're about to read were written by Jesus.

'As a Black Spanish Inca Irish aetheist post transexual muslim lesbian pacifist I have often asked myself that if I came back to earth and took an interest in politics, which ideaology would suit me the best?'

An Arch Angel (Gabriel I think) suggested that visit the Republican Party which he said was full of people who claim that I am their friend and only they have a right to say this. So I went to Texas and as I walked barefoot through the State I was stoned, you need a lot of dope when you look like me. I sensed some hostility and my identity, race, religion and sexuality was questioned. I did not realise that the right wing republicans fell for Satan's party trick of impersonating me and telling people to make love to war and to never admit to being wrong. I mean how stupid did I make you? I should have looked more closely at the plan.

Oh and the burning bush thing? Sorry George but I did not instruct you to send firebombs into countries who disagree with you.

Tomorrow when the right wing conservative christians wake up they wil be different. They will be kind and non judgemental. This will be my miracle.

And I'm not eligible to vote I have no country for I am an old man.

    Bless You

Luke 18:25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

So you tell me which party is concerned with preserving the wealth of the aristocrats. Which party demands we extend tax cuts for the richest two percent? Which party opposes health care for all? Which party would undermine freedom of religion?

If you have identified that party you know which party Jesus would nail as the modern-day Scribes and Pharasees.

Right. He wouldn't be on the side of the Wall Street banksters, or the Koch Brothers, or Andrew Breitbart, and he'd be horrified by the warmongers and even the the social conservatives who would be happy to send gays and lesbians to Devils Island.

It would depend on who was writing the book this time.  The last novel was written by a Roman tax collector and set a couple of hundred years in his past, that would be like setting it in about 1800 now.  This of course would mean a lot of guesswork about the actual person - as most sources can't even get the main events right - and the politics of the main events have been distorted beyond recognition, and we have mountains of words written at that time - unlike the author of the original.  Dracula would be a more convincing 200 year old book, or Wuthering Heights.  If it were me writing it again I would take out most of the violence and hate and make the central character more of a family kind of guy and less prone to a death wish, oh yes - I would take out all that miracle cr@p - it just doesn't wash really, I mean absolutely EVERYONE was doing that stuff back then - and these days you have to have photos and medical testimony,  we wouldn't get away with that.  His politics? I guess he would have to be a political rebel, like the original character, so he would have to be a hanging voter.

would you think that he would support a party who supports those who breaks his laws and then teaches moral ambivalence in schools?  Do you think he would support a party that actively tries to remove his Father's name from public settings and actively prohibits any talk of religion in public?  Do you really think that he would support a party that encourages behavior through permissiveness that results in a bunch of bad choices including a pet clinic that slaughters those people consider to be too early in development to be considered people?

On the other hand, it is true that they who call for constant war without cause would find themselves at the brunt of his tongue.  Those who use platitudes of religious feeling to cover for religious bigotry would also not be allowable.  He did say that Cesar had a right to take that which belonged to Cesar.  If he was however the same who spoke to the early prophets he wasn't in favor of tyranny and removed governments that tried to establish religions other then his own according to his prophets under any circumstances.

I say he would seek the destruction of both parties in favor of a theocracy if he comes back as the person the Jews were hoping he would come when he sacrificed himself instead.

I don't think Christ would sign up with any political party. I agree with the first fellow who responded. Jesus would be out there in the fields changing lives. I expect if Jesus made a speech in the house, senate, and the White house he would be saying:
"Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." (Matthew 12:34)
    Or
“Woe to you, senators and congressmen, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence." (Matthew 23:25)
    Or

“Woe to you, senators and congressmen, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness." Matthew 23:27)

    But that's just my opinion.
