How to teach if a person of 40 year old is illiterate ???.

   Is it possible to teach a person who is about 40 year old and is totally illiterate???

      Teach them what? I used to teach people with poor basic skills and used a lot of images to convey information rather than the written word. It takes a lot of creativity! How you would do it depends a lot on what you are trying to teach and the cognitive ability of the person.

      Yes.
      Patience, love, compassion, understanding and let them learn at their own pace. Don't force it to come, because that will only cause total utter confusion and frustration.

   If you are talking about the basic literacy skills, you start with the alphabets associating them with stuff they are familiar with, they are quick to learn if interested and the results are fast.
   The rest of it, you follow as with children, the advantage is 40 year old can handle a lot of concepts at a time so the progress is fast.

   Yes, it is certainly possible to teach an adult how to read.  Check out your local library or adult education center for programs and literature on adult literacy programs in your community.  If you are going to tutor an adult, then go into it with patience.  They may feel ashamed, but just encourage them...celebrate their bravery in taking on such a big challenge!  Avoid using children's material, this is not the time or place for refrigerator magnets.  Find their passion or hobbies... like fishing, for example.  Create stories and learning tools related to fishing.  By treating them like an adult and making the material applicable to their lives, they will get an extra boost of self-confidence... and that is half the battle.

      Yes - if it just because that person has never learned then it can be an exciting positive and rapid ride to literacy.  BUT take them to a school if you can.  If you can't get them to school or to a teacher and you want to teach them to read yourself - you must learn how to do it before you jump in and cause huge problems.
      
      Why are they illiterate and who do you have to help ?

   I have seen in many rural areas, under-developed countries have illiterate population. Some areas of Africa is one of those places. People do not know about proper life, civilization is extremely old... why dont we teach them ...

   There is no difference teaching someone who is illiterate to someone who has difficulty with a foreign language...all things are possible...and just because someone is illiterate that does not necessarily mean they have low intellect...they might not have had a chance early on to learn. I wonder sometimes if severe dyslexia might be almost as bad.

   Methodology of teaching grown-ups is different than children's. You can learn basics of it. It is not a complicated thing.

    If you live in America, there are literacy groups which you can find through your community center or town hall.  They are free.  All mentors are volunteers.
