I have a very talented son. He is a 6'1, 212pd, 7th Grader. He is a natural. Pro-football players have told my husband and I that, time and time again. He is currently being coached by a NFL (Chiefs) retired player and a former NBA player who also went onto be a Coach for the European League. Whoppie, right? Well that's what I think. I can't seem to get through Eddie's thick skull that being a great athlete also means doing well in school. To me, both should go hand in hand. Discipline and self-reliance, right; or am I completely wrong as a 38 yr.old mother of two? What's wrong with kids nowadays?
What's wrong is that, these days, kids seem to believe that having some athletic skill gives them a free pass when it comes to the rest of their lives. An attitude that has bitten more than one kid right on his or her little tushie. Sadly, this is an attitude that's been fostered over the past several decades, but I'm noticing that aura of 'free passes' fading a bit as more and more professionals find themselves in hot water.
Have you considered laying down the law and telling your kid that, no grades, no games. Period. It'd be really tough to stick to, but you'd absolutely have to hold your ground. In the end, the education is far and away more important than anything else.
Yeah, just last week. But Eddie always has a comeback. He went to the ball game, sat on the bench in his dress clothes, and then later this week he got an F on a science test and... well I posted this thread. I think until the NBA changes their policies, parents like myself are screwed. We even made him sit out a season, but hell that didn't work either... I am completely at a loss.
Try to keep him out of it, period. No sitting on the bench in his street clothes...no going to the game at all. At the middle school level, it's going to be a lot easier to get a handle on the situation than it will be once he gets to high school. If he wants to even GO to the game, he has to bring home a C or better.
That is good advice. I would also get the coaches/mentors involved fully. Parents saying do better in school is one thing. A coach, who has been there, done that, backing the parents up gives you credibility and power. Of course, one big problem today is not enough coaches or parents are giving the tough love you are. Good luck. You are doing the right thing. Just my opinion.

How do you see today's economy affecting the specialization of youth sports? I personally feel that we're taking this "all my eggs in one basket and I'll pay anything to get my 8yr old to college" approach to far. What are your thoughts?
