I can only speculate you don't want the replies to erode your beliefs no matter how wrong they may be.

Only administration can close a thread, obviously they thought it had gotten out of hand.

Ugh! Does anyone know of any forums where there isn't a babysitter and anything goes? I mean aren't we all adults here? Aren't we capable of policing ourselves? Geesh!

          You're too funny.

          Policing themselves?

What makes you think people can police themselves?

Governments exist because people cannot police themselves.
Religion exists because people want to ensure people are controlled.

Trust, self responsibility among the most average- is virtually non-existent.

It's the Internet, how much damage can you do?

You can always start your own forum and deal with spammers and trolls, etc...

Judging by some of the threads I have seen in my time here, we can't be trusted to police ourselves!

Looks like they are clamping down a little on the more abusive threads - after all, this is a writing site, first and foremost. Threads full of insults do not create a great impression to potential clients and writers (I have already had one potential client mention this when I sent a link to my Hubs as a portfolio).

I am sure that there are plenty of political forums online where people can debate to their heart's content. The rest of us can get on with writing/making a living smile

If you wish to truly see what "anything goes" looks like, go see the forum site called 4chan.  It's not my cup of tea, but it fits your definition of no babysitters.

there are many potential reasons. it all depends on the thread. in most cases, it is because the thread got out of hand. in some cases because the thread got way off topic.

Or because the thread's author made unproven allegations and nice people got called "stupid" etc...

Yup I see which thread now.

"Nice people" is subject to interpretation.
I personally, have been called much worse than stupid by so-called "nice people".

I read the thread in question. I think what administration was trying to do was head it off at the pass to prohibit it from becoming another one of those hate threads. I saw a term used that a lotta people freak-out over. It means nothing to me.  The OP was very direct. Just stirred the pot.........then the chimers chimed-in on her side, then the others came in from that way, then ...........get the picture?
