Does a presence on Twitter help you get HubPages traffic?

I've been experimenting with Twitter for about a month (@ginacoole) and have posted sayings, quotes and jokes along with the occasional hub promotion.  I've also tried including a narrative over a number of days.  Although the number of readers increases each day by a small amount, I'm not convinced it is really increasing my Hub traffic.

Many Hubbers appear to only post links to their hubs on Twitter.  I'm not convinced that this will work.

I increasingly feel it may be better to spend time writing commercially, SEO focused hubs and rely on genuine backlinks rather than self backlinking and self promotion.

What do other Hubbers think?  Any tips on using Twitter to generate real traffic?

It may get you a lot of traffic if you have loyal followers who are interested in your stuff, however, these people may not be likely to click ads. They are more likely to read your information. (Just my opinion)

What you mainly want is organic traffic coming primarily from google, yahoo, and other search engines.

If you want to send backlinks, use social marker.com or something similar. Twitter would really only be good if you had 100s or 1000s of followers who look at your stuff, and may not even click anything

It is worth doing if you have the sort of twitter account where your followers are friends and colleagues with an interest in your usual twitterstream. Chances are they will retweet it to a whole new audience or share it elsewhere and hopefully get a viral thing going for you. If you just spam twitter though, not much will come of it.

don't waste time in twitter, post your links a few times a day as a SEO strategy, that's all

Thanks - the first 2 replies have been helpful!
I believe the Tweet links are nofollow anyway.

yes, they are no follow for sure but getting more reader from twitter may luckily result into that some of your readers sends you some backlink through their contents.

I sell books on line and many are at sites with hit counters on individual book.
When I started using twitter I tried post several lins to books on Twitter and noticed an immediate and substantial increase in the hits books received that would last for 24 or so hours.
Posting updates on my blog has a similar effect.
On several occasions the number of hits exceeds the number of followers, which suggests they are either followed by  google or retweetted.

For the very short time it takes, well worth the effort. Even if most don't click on anything that earns you money, if they don't go to your shop none will buy.

I think facebook is much more effective. It is easy to find friends follow them and get them followed. But you never know where some one would actually read and click on your ad. So keep trying

I'm not that interested in catching friends, I'd much rather be followed by strangers. I know that very few of my friends will click on on-line ads.

I post links on Facebook and Twitter. I usually get a few hits from Twitter. Remember to use hashtags so when people search for the topic they will find it.

Thanks for your answers.  While I can see Twitter is a useful marketing tool I'm not convinced it is useful to me for Hub promotion.  I only have around 70 followers (although numbers are increasing slowly).  I'm not sure it is worth the work of gaining say 10,000 followers just to promote Hubs.

A friend of mine uses Twitter to promote his consultancy and he is a 'thought leader' in his field (education).  This seems to work well for him but its not the same as promoting web content!

If you hash tag, you don't need any followers at all.

Hash tags lets you show thousands of people your post.

          As Gina said below.

If I wrote a hub about say porsches, I could do a tweet such as:

          hubpages.com/porches - #porsches are the #car of the century. Reasons #why you should #buy this #automobile.

You can hashtag every word if you want. Each hashtagged word goes into a different channel which people with that interest can view. Just click one of the hashed words after you make the tweet to see!

I agree with john on point of getting followed by strangers than family/friends.

Also use hashtags to get more attention.

Done right, you can have a profound effect with Twitter.

But it takes longer than a month.

Be patient. Do a little bit at a time. Establish yourself as a quality player.

And what WryLilt has said above is spot on advice.

Thanks wrylit and darkside - really helpful - logically most of my followers probably don't read my stuff anyway but hashtags means some people are bound to read it - the penny has dropped!

BRIAN - if  I write a hub about Rabbits then if my tweet contains the hash tag #rabbits then people interested in rabbits will search on #rabbits and find my Tweet.
