My Father Died and No One Told Me

   My Father remarried and his wife and family have been less than "accepting" to say the least.
   
   We wrote back and forth.  Suddenly no response for my letters.  Life for me was very traumatic at the time. 
   
   Long story short, I phoned him and no reply.  I kept sending letters - no reply.
   
   I found that he had moved to California.
   
   I then happened when I was moving to find his social security number.  I put it in the computer and found out that he had died!
   
   So traumatic.  I miss him.
   
   My best friend says I should contact an attorney and check out the will - but I see no reason for this - his new wife survived him.
   
   I just had to share my sorrow.  I cannot believe they kept my letters and didn't have the honor to inform me.
   
   Please pray for me - this still is very painful.  I have been in denial for some time.  Now the pain is setting in.

      Wow, that's horrible.  Hopefully somehow they just never got the letters or something.  Who could be that much of an a-hole to not tell you if they knew where/how to reach you?  Just wow.

      I am so sorry to hear this. 
      My father died in 1997 and I discovered this by searching for him on the internet.  He had been missing for 10 years of his own volition and when I found records for him they included his death certificate.
      I know the shock of having the reality hit you via computer screen and the mixed emotions of heartbreak and the feel of abandonment.
      You are in my thoughts and prayers.

   I'm so sorry for your loss and the manner you discovered it.
   
   However, I'm not an attorney and certainly don't know the laws in every state, but I'm pretty sure you still have an interest if he died intestate (without a will).  Not sure if it's something you want to pursue though.

   I'm praying for you as well. I have no family at all, but in the late 1990s, I discovered on the Internet, databases telling me that I had half a dozen aunts and uncles I had never met or knew existed; they had died in their 60s and 70s in the mid-1990s and I missed meeting them by a few years. Also learned that one grandfather lived until I was 9 years old - never met him and he was right here in town.
   
   Families and feuds can cause needless pain, but be encouraged by your friends.

   This reminds me of something that happened a long time ago when I worked at the county tax office.  An older couple came to see us wanting to get the tax records/ownership info on a house.  They were from out of town.  They had been sending cards and letters to their Aunt in town and at some point she stopped writing back.  They had come to town and found that someone had simply taken over living in her house.  They were there to try to determine who the people were and how they could just move in.  I think this couple beleived they were her only blood relatives.  But, evidently whoever took over the house had been throwing the mail away.  Unfortunately, I never heard the ending to that story.  But, they were quite shocked to learn she had died months before.
