I was thinking about a few things today on the train ride to the office and the one thing that hit me was that a lot of the more popular content that's getting buzz on the web right now is really short. Whether it's short videos short reviews or short thoughts -- the fact is that there is no love for the longer, more quality content that is we all (and search engines) love so much.

So, with all of this in my head I decided to post a semi-sarcastic rant on how much we love long content and cant stand the short stuff. I think in my head I pictured a rivalry between those who create short content and those who create the longer stuff and how we're a refuge for the longer content creators.

Pretty random, but this is how my mind thinks sometimes...enjoy!

I love that you love long content.

Personally,  I am more short to medium content, but there are some super-awesome hubbers who really must put  many hours into their productions.

The ones who include history, graphics and lots of research  do get my attention and respect. This is called... writing. It is wonderful to see so many  real writers here.

Well, my late observations show that search engines are not that happy with long content. I could be wrong of course smile

Don' t search engines search  the whole content? if there are more terms, phrases and combinations-- don't they find more  to index.  I'm sure I could be wrong... probably.

If you consider that the goal of search engines is not to index for a sake of indexing, but to deliver the most relevant content to the searcher, you'll see that they are not really looking for more combinations, they are looking for relevance - in whichever way they define it... smile

Hmmmm.. so the definition is the mystery.
Much like HP ratings.  It's a good thing. I love mystery.

Oh, I think it is much more mystery than HP ratings. In fact it is a billion dollar mystery smile

Strictly from a reader-friendly standpoint, I think people are expecting short concise answers to their questions(searches).  It's like we've all got ADD now.  I know it seems that way for me.  I want things in bite-sized chunks so that I can scan them quickly and move on.  I have a tough time reading hubs that seem to be one long paragraph.

    What is typically considered "long?"

P.S. I can't imagine anyone doesn't have a hard time reading one long paragraph.

Hey Ryan, I recently published some pretty long answers to 2 of your requests. The one about the Hot Rods big_smile and the one about Muscle cars big_smile

Long content is great, but I wonder how many people read all of it!

I'm curious to know what you mean by "long".

Personally I'm one of those people who likes my answers short, but I don't mean one paragraph short - I mean, if I have to scroll down more than twice, I've lost interest.

I've always followed the advice generally offered around the net - aim for 800 to 1500 words.  Is that still sensible?

I'm a long-ish fan.  If it's so short it can't interest me, then what's the point?  I don't want to know just what, but WHY.

    Nice rant, Ryan smile

I suppose that it is horses for courses, really. If somebody wants to find out 'How to Change a Car Tyre,' short and concise is good. If they want to read about 'Aristotle's Ethics' or 'The History of Californian Mining,' then long and detailed is better.

That is the beauty of Hubpages - there is room for all! big_smile
