Gauging or "stretching" your ears

   I personally gauged my ears to teach myself to have the will to not rush. Every once in awhile I will let them shrink down and start over. It's not as much for attention as it is to teach myself waiting for things is worth it, what are your thoughts?

   I have gauged ears (multiple gauges in each ear), but I don't see any need to let them shrink down and then re-stretch them.
   
   Having gone through college and graduate school and earned my degrees, having saved money up so that I could travel or make major purchases seems to have been more than enough to teach me how to wait for things that I wish.

      study the tribes that started ear gauging in africa, I let them shrink for several reasons, one, I have gauges I like in smaller sizes, two, sometimes one will fall out, so I shrink the other so they are even, and three, I don't want to go terribly big, but I enjoy making them bigger

      Putting things in the earlobe, to make the earring hold larger. I think.   I have seen some people walking around with ones in their earlobes, the size of quarters.
      
      I don't see the attraction, but to each their own.

      Honestly, no offense @cagsil it's not about fashion or appearence for alot of people, that's only what a fraction of people do it for, most who get that big are addicted, not many at all do it for the original reasons

   Man, I remember my mom stretching  my ears as a kid as she dragged me into the wood shed. She had a guage she used on me ass too.

   What *are* the original reasons?
   
   I'm pretty open-minded about stuff like this--I like tattoos and piercings; I have some myself. But I just have to admit (and please don't be offended), that this particular type of bodily adornment really makes me feel squeamish. I would never suggest that anyone not do it if they wanted to...but I literally find it difficult to look at.
   
   I wonder why it creeps me out so much.

      probably the gaping empty holes it creates, it started in Africa as a sign of respect, the larger your holes, the more you were thought of, because the process takes time. I do it to teach myself patience, like I said, but it's not as morbid as most people think

   I actually saw someone today working at Target that had both ears guaged about the size of a quarter. 
   
   It does make me wonder why someone would do it, just as a curiousity issue, not a judgmental issue.

    I'm waiting for the next big fad-LIP PLATES. Remember those old Nat'l Geographic mags with the pictures of the women in Africa & other contries.

    I've never thought of gauging for that reason, I like it, at least your learning something in benifit other than people who just do it because its "the new thing".

    I haven't the foggiest what the average persons' reason is to gauge their ears. I've recently started looking into gauging my own ears, but for the simple and harmless reason that I just plain like the way they look, and I think it would look attractive on me.

    PLEASE.... for the love of God. The term is stretching not guaging.guage refers to the thickness of the jewellery andd not the procedure itself. Oh and lip plates have already made it into modern society, websites like BME and Bodymod.org have lots of information and pics of them.
