      no, it's rigidity of thinking that does this - whether religious or not

      You know they are'nt that fanatical here. Is it only in certain countries you find this fanaticism?

        you mean NZ?  Yes, there are some fanatics, just not so numerous as the US of A.  I'm from NZ - read my 2 ex-christian hubs which was about my experience with fanatics in NZ

          Really? Where? I have only ever seen fanatical people get on the news about 20 years ago. Once and that was the Eckankar followers. One night I might add. Perhaps you need to be in the circles to see that they are fanatical?

          Oh will read them. Very interesting!

            I have 2 hubs that start with ex-christian - one is from believer to skeptic & other is throwing baby out with bathwater.
            You have heard of the likes of Brian Tamaki (as a NZ example of a fanatic)?
            Now live in Australia.
            Australia & NZ aren't so hard-core as the US, but they still have religious influence from the US.

              Oh yes! Brian haha. Sorry forgot all about him. Destiny Church! Yes I do apologize. He was in the news last year a couple of times. Don't remember why. He sure has influence but only over those who follow him. His right hand man or whatever they call them resigned if thats what they do and left the church. No one knew why but it was speculated that he did not agree with the way the church acquired money. At least the media speculated that.

              I have a few clients that are followers but they never mention their faith. Its just something you don't talk about here or push as far as I am aware.

              We live beside a couple of missionaries they don't either.

              So what kind of fanatical are we talking about? Brian Tamaki Fanatical?

              Oh and I read one of your hubs. Those people telling you, you were the devil and had turned your back on God were from NZ? Not very nice people are they. It is sad when you have the blind leading the blind. Peoples interpretations however well intended can do more harm then good. In your case I understand why you have left.

              My sister was seventh day adventist a few years back. Her and her husband left because many were not practicing what they preached. Or misinterpreted whatever to suit their agendas

                  Yes one that was made up I would imagine. Don't really know?  I don't know what they teach? He use to have a program on Tele early in the morning when every one was sleeping. Maybe his devotees weren't sleeping I don't know. Wanted to start some kind of exclusive community. He does have a huge following. They are from all walks of life apparently.

                    well read their website :

                    We believe the church is the body of Christ and His corporate expression of Christ on the earth, and represents the manifold wisdom of God. He is the head. The church comprises of all people who have been saved and born of the Spirit. The church is God's only hope for the human race.

      Religion does not teach fanatacism; it is the persons who misuse religion for their own ends.

          Religion does not say that my way is the only way; religion allows free will, it is a basic religious concept:

          [109:1] In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
          [109:2] Say, ‘O ye disbelievers!
          [109:3] ‘I worship not that which you worship;
          [109:4] ‘Nor worship you what I worship.
          [109:5] ‘And I am not going to worship that which you worship;
          [109:6] ‘Nor will you worship what I worship.
          [109:7] ‘For you your religion, and for me my religion.’

            ‘For you your religion, and for me my religion.’ is wonderful place to stand at but there are verse which fanatics use...now from where do those verses come?...from religion right?

              There is no such verse; they quote out of context; they are ill-intentioned politicians who misuse religion for their own willful ends.

    I think lack of critical thinking and also reacting without proper consideration of things is what causes problems - not any structure of religion of itself.

      yes, & those caught up in the whole religious experience are lazy thinkers - they just believe it's legitimate because sucked in emotionally

    I think you are spot on actually, and that type of rigidity is found even here on HP among its active forum members hmm

    The more rigid one is regarding their belief the more they look and sound like fanatics.
