      from the 80's, KRS-1 from Boogie Down Productions hands down.
      from the 90's, Jay-Z, Biggie, Tupac
      from 2000, Eminem and Kanye
      
      Best on-the-spot freestylers to battle, I think are KRS-1, Jay-Z, DMX, Biggie, Common and MosDef.
      
      I love MosDef, he has a few freestyle vids on YouTube.

         There's some old skool Kool Moe Dee that was way ahed of its time. My fav is BDKane. Yup, even over Rakim. Then Biggie took the crown. I wasn't really paying attn to the scene when he was around but 5 sec of any one of his rhymes showed his talent.
         
         I think the trend setter now is/has been Eminem. He's a sick psychotic lyricist and I am not down with those type of rhymes (one reason I can bop to BDK anyday) but Emimen can get down. I also see his influence on the underground scene and that's always a good indicator.
         
         After watching a few freestyle battles on the Tube I got the deal...the rhyme schemes are more intricate now, but, unfortunately, madd psycho. But the same with the Grafitti: much more demonism in the color schemes with cryptic, slithery letters. It's true that the art of a society is indicative of the health of the same.

            I forgot about Big Daddy Kane. My fav of his was from the Juice Soundtrack, "Nuff Respect." AHHHHHHH! I love it. Rakim was another great back in the day. I do love watching the battles though.

          yip I know Roots Manuva and Lowkey, they are cool man I lived in London for about 3 years. To be honest there are a lot of dope rappers out there but they are mostly underground and people don't know them.

    I like some rap. Not picking, just curious. Why didn't you just title "rapper lyricist" ?? - what am I missing here? Gotta admit, you sound better. I like several new ones, but I'll always be a Tupac fan.
