The Blizzard of 2011 Has Begun

As many of you know I live in Columbia, MO USA and we are under a blizzard winter storm warning.  It first start to rain/ice yesterday and quit sometime in the afternoon.  However it started up again at 6am, which quickly then turned into snow.  So its official our winter storm is here, which gave me the idea for this thread.

They say the blizzard effects over 100 million people, and spans all across the Midwest, parts of the East coast on up to the northeast region.  That's one third of the USA folks.

Here in Columbia we are already at an inch or two, and it's only been snowing for approx. an hour now.  They say it is suppose to snow 1 to 2 inches every hour, until Wed.evening. I believe it will.

I'm originally from Butte, MT.  Snow like this is common in Butte.  However, here in MO it's a completely different story.  For instance, I don't own a generator and my neighbors don't own on either, nor snow chains for our cars.  It is illegal to drive with snowchains here in MO.  Columbia is a small city of only 100,000 citizens/college students.  The city of Columbia only owns 18 snowplow trucks to service a city of our size. Not only that, I would have to drive to Iowa if I wanted to buy a snowmobile off the showroom floor. So I'm kinda screwed if it really gets bad. Urg!

I'm sure quite a few of you hubbers are from one of these 29 states said to get hit by this blizzard.  Or maybe you live somewhere, were blizzards are a common occurrence like Tibet.  I would love it if we all could share our winter experiences, participate in winter weather updates and report on the happenings in your area, or even share pics and videos if you like.  With 29 states being effected by this, I think  it's safe to say it's going to be a snow fest!

Here are some shots of my neighborhood.  It's Snow'Lliza out there!

Well, everybody look at that stone wall in my backyard.  It was one of the first pictures I featured.

Look at it an hour ago,

        http://s2.hubimg.com/u/4539473_f248.jpg

This is how heavy it was snowing then.
        http://s4.hubimg.com/u/4539499_f248.jpg

        And now look at the wall;

        http://s3.hubimg.com/u/4539550_f248.jpg

That's my sons car now, and that is new snow since my husband shoveled the drive way.  I featured a picture of the car and my husband shoveling on page 2 of this thread.

        http://s2.hubimg.com/u/4539597_f248.jpg

        And now this is how hard the snow has fallen in the past thirty minutes or so;

        http://s3.hubimg.com/u/4539626_f248.jpg

Well I'm off for the evening.  I'll take pictures of my snow blizzard progress in the morning.  It's snowing hard here, and isn't suppose to let up until tomorrow.  They claim we have another 10 to 12 hours of heavy snow fall still to come.  I cannot even begin to imagine...lol

Oh I will.  I'm staying inside.  I am a surgical scrub, and my three surgeons canceled all their surgeries for today and tomorrow.  So I'm lucky that I get to stay home and still get paid.  I know that cannot be said for everybody.  But thank you for your warm thoughts.

Great idea, IE!  I am in Mountain Grove, Missouri, about 60 miles east of Springfield.  We currently have freezing rain, which is expected to transition to snow in about an hour.

We stocked up on supplies yesterday and we do have a generator. We also did everything we could to prepare our animals (goats, chickens, horses) for the weather.  Our dogs and cats are lucky; they get to stay inside with us!

I don't think pictures would be very interesting for you, but currently it is about 20 degrees F here in Dallas/Fort Worth.  There is about an inch of snow on the ground -- but it's kind of deceptive because underneath is hard-packed sleet which can be slippery to walk on.  There won't be any more precipitation, fortunately.

And, oh, silly me, our temperatures dropped so rapidly overnight (from about 50 to 20) that I forgot to unhook the garden hose from the faucet outside.  I had been using it to make sure my pond is full.  Currently, I've got a clamp light with a 75 watt light bulb aimed at the frozen faucet, and I'm shielding the immediate area with a huge bedspread.

We are not expected to get above freezing until Friday afternoon.  But because it's Super Bowl week here in DFW, there are extra crews from TxDOT out on major highways, doing a lot of sanding.  The good news is that on Super Bowl Sunday, the high temperature is expected to be 55 degrees.

Currently there are many flight delays and DFW Airport is doing a lot of de-icing of planes.

IntimatEvolution, it doesn't sound like Columbia would fare well in these adverse conditions.  I am going to pray you or your family stays well, safe, and warm during this challenging time.

Thank you for your prayers!  Sounds like you have everything under controlled in your neck of the woods.  I'll pray for you that it'll stay that way!

I am ten minutes away from center of Dallas and five minutes away from Dallas Cowboy Stadium where they are busy with the Superbowl on Sunday. I woke up this am and this is what I've seen. Sleet rain and snow. The heater is working properly though. We have a spare space heater just in case. Snow starting to build up, last year it was up to 15 in. Unusual but two years in a row, we have snow here.

@Greek: Beware of the pay back....  wink

The winter of 1993, we had almost 4 feet of snow on our house tops. Roofs were collapsing, and people were dying from climbing up and shoveling it off, falling off in the process. Our roof wasn't steep at all and was fairly easy to shovel, so I climbed up and started shoveling. It was one of the most grueling workouts I can remember. My son, 6 at the time climbed up and tried to help. Before long my 8 yr old daughter and wife at the time were also on the roof helping. On the ground we created snow banks against the house that were almost 8 feet high in places. My son yelled, "hey dad!" and he dove off the roof into the tallest snowbank and was buried about half way in. After nearly having a heart attack at that sight, scrambling down the ladder, he climbed out, on top and said, "COOL!!!" and did it again and again with my daughter, despite my yelling for them not to.

The only thing that scared me was when they were digging snow tunnels. That would have killed them if they had collapsed.

I guess you have to make lemonaide out of lemons.

I'm in Connecticut where we've already got almost 60 inches on the ground from previous storms. It's been snowing since late last night, and we're supposed to get that same one-two punch -- snow followed by sleet and ice. I just have no idea where we're going to put this new snow! smile

I apologize if I seemed overly concerned about our Super Bowl here in DFW.  Any problems in this area really pale in comparison to what some folks are facing.  I need to keep a proper perspective.  I'm just watching things closely because I'm a volunteer for some Super Bowl pre-game activities.

I'm supposed to do some extra shifts as an airport greeter, but there may not be many incoming folks to greet for a few days!

Here in Wisconsin we got 4-6 inches of snow yesterday and are now approaching the end of a 12 hour rest before the Blizzard Warning takes effect.  While it's not currently snowing (from what I can tell, lol, it could always be a super fine snow) the wind is certainly picking up!

We're getting a bit right now here in Chicago but the real stuff is going to start dropping in an hour or 2. We're supposed to get between 16 and 22 inches over then next 24 hours.  Just stocked up on some food and gas for the snow blower and cars.

I was 10 the last time we had a storm like this come through. At that time, the snow drifts were so high that I had to sled out the second story window of my bedroom so I could get to the front door and dig out an opening...lol

The Univ.of MO closed for the second day running, that is only the second time in school history.  Which began in 1839, so even though it has happened before, this weather is relatively new to us.  They say I won't be able to leave my home and get to work until Monday.  Columbia doesn't have enough snowplows to hit the residential areas until this weekend.  Go figure.

But anywho, my family is safe and healthy.  Nothing is damaged.  We all had a great time staying at home, and making beef stew.  The weather was so crazy last night, and the winds were so bad that nobody can give us an accurate snowfall (depth) numbers.  They say that 18" fell.  That's not as bad as our 1995 snow record of 22" in eight hours.

    Have a great day!

We got a total of 20 inches and we were told another 6 inches by 3pm here in Chicago but the sky is crystal blue and no snow in sight. My fiance in the north suburbs got 23 inches with snow drifts as high as feet.

Have you ever heard or seen lightning and thunder during a snow storm? Well it happened here last night and it was the strangest thing. I cannot recall that ever happening in my 42 years.
