Keep your wits about, stay calm and non provocative, i have found violent people don't like to engage in conversation, they want to either hit you and run away or rob you of your treasure. Staying calm and trying to mediate with the person and playing for time is a good weapon. The assailant will not want to hang around and be lectured to, his first weapon "suprise" has already come and gone. That puts you in a slightly better position. He/she will want to get away with there dignity so allow him to leave.
Having said all that if you have a 6" knife at your throat, give him what he wants unless you have magnum in your right hand.

There are legal issues about any weapon you carry, especially if it is concealed. Even with martial training, you can be charged if you damage your assailant overly. Myself, I am a fan of telescoping batons, possibly a knife to back that up. Although, awareness of your surroundings and control of ones body outweighs everything. But what I have found to be an ingenious weapon,(if anyone has an actual name for this please let me know) I call it 'the traveler'. It is a square piece of strong cloth, towels work well, a big square mind you. Put some stones in the middle and grab the corners. It turns into a manriki like weapon with great range and a devastating attack. The stones at the bottom create a blunt attack and great momentum when swung. Can also be used as a sling with enough practice. Someone busting out a towel like a maniac would surely dissuade any attacker, especially after the first hit.

Car keys. you already carry them around. they make a deadly set of brass knuckles if you stick the keys through your fingers. You can get enough of an edge to run away.

There is no man/woman alive who can take a stiff finger jabbed in an eye.
Wait for the opportunity and forget MMA moves. Cram 2 fingers in the mutha's eyes....DEEP!.... THEN GET THE HELL OUTA THERE!

Preparation - be able to act on instinct and handle the adrenaline rush.

Regardless of whatever weapon or alarm system (including martial training..angry armed attacker is much different than pads and a classroom) you choose to carry, you better be able to activate yourself in the short window available to you.

I think there is no such thing as the "best" weapon. It depends purely on your training. There worst thing you can do is carry a weapon that you are not trained to use. Look a knife, baton, ASP, kali sticks are all good and well should you be attacked my 1 person who isn't trained in anyway... BUT if you are attacked by multiple assailants and you are carrying a weapon that you have not trained to use then there is a good chance that the very same weapon will be used against you. If self defense is Important to you then it highly recommended that you become proficient in unarmed combat as this can be considered as an "invisible" weapon it goes everywhere with you and it's always with you 24/7 and nobody knows you are "armed"  there might be situations were you in a place were a knife, gune or any weapons might not be allowed..if you are skilled in unarmed combat then you will always be armed. When comes to carry a actual weapon I have always preferred the kali sticks,  had a problem with carrying around in the car and stuff because they are difficult to conceal and at the same time to keep in a place were they be retrieved quickly if need be. Fortunately I managed to get my hands on the Telescopin ASP's which are awesome because they can be retracted to a small enough size to fit in the car door compartment. They strike angles, attacks and defenses will all be the same as the kali sticks so it's perfect.

Absolutely pepper spray... A well place shot will bring even the most dangerous opponent to a level of negotiability even a child can deal with. The rest is up to you. Walk away if you like... he won't follow. It's small, lightweight, and causes no permanent damage, so it is appropriate for ANY situation that requires defense in the first place, and will disable multiple attackers. I've trained my whole life, and still carry police grade mace on my keychain... Hell, a true warrior doesn't kill when a nasty blast to the eyes is enough!

SELF DEFENSE TOOLS for Mr. Average
The best self-defense tool is the one you have in your hand.
Self Defense is a combination of Mind, Body and spirit
As an older person involved in various martial arts, I realize that people study martial arts for many reasons. They may strive for self-defense skills or mental development. Or a combination of both.  To achieve these goals, you must develop mental skills in focus, discipline, spirit, achieving goals etc. You must also develop physical skills in strength, conditioning, endurance and co-ordination. You also develop muscle memory and techniques.  Almost any pursuit of any martial arts skills will be of some benefit. When it comes to pure Self-defense how ever, this is where the controversy begins. The market place is full of people with great credentials that offer you THE ANSWER. I would like to offer some suggestions to help you find your own answers
You must first evaluate yourself honestly in deciding what Self Defense path(s) to chose and what areas to develop.

    1) Have you developed a good self defense Mind set?
Have you developed a mindset where you are aware of your surroundings and go into a defense mode when situations warrant?  This could be fight or flight. A color code system is a useful tool for this. I believe Jeff Cooper; a firearms expert originally came up with the color code concept of using colors as a mental trigger. E.G. White, Yellow, Red for danger levels. You could call this situational analysis.

    2) What are your real physical capabilities?
If you are overweight and out of shape, start now to change. Eat one less doughnut in the morning and go for one more walk. Continue the trend

    3) Are you developing your self-defense abilities?
How much effective Martial arts training do you have? Is it a realty based Combat art?
If some one ran at you, grabbed your ears and tried to head but you in the face, what would you do?

    4) How to select an appropriate training path? Structured classes, Basic self-defense courses or self-study?

    Martial arts schools
If you have the time and money to take classes, chose carefully.  A good school and a teacher you trust can be invaluable away. Reality based or traditional? If you are a 60 years old, overweight, out of condition man, you probably should not commit to 5 or 10 years learning “Praying Monkey Fist Kung Foo” to learn self defense.  You might instead seek out a basic self-defense curricular using self-defense tools.

    DEVELOP BASIC SELF DEFENSE CONCEPTS.
Note; I said concepts. Not teniques like. “If the attacker does this, you do that”. This can take a long time to learn.  Look for basic concepts. For example, what general concept should you follow if attacked?  One answer, Look for AID.
The AID concept   Avoid, Invade, Attack.
Avoid the punch, kick, strike or stab by controlling distance, position and blocking.
Invade the attackers space where he is standing. Step on his foot, Bump his knee, push him
Attack with your own punching or striking with whatever empty hand or tool you have.

    5) USE DEFENSIVE TOOLS. If visiciously attacked, be prepared mentally and physically to use what you have as a self-defense tool.
Again the best self-defense tool is the one you have in your hand.
This would include a sturdy DEFENSIVE CANE, STICK, ICE SCRAPER, FLASHLIGHT or KUBOTAN Key chain.

You can easily learn self-defense movements and concepts by returning to basics.
Most Martial art systems at its core have similar basic self-defense movements and concepts. The other benefits were a by-product. The important thing is that you should select easy to learn movements and concepts that don’t require years of training.

I enjoy developing basic self defense knowledge and have created several DVD,s
“DEFENSIVE CANE 1 –BASICS DVD, DEFENSIVE CANE 2-STREET TALK DVD, DEFENSIVE ESCRIMA STICKS DVD and DEFENSIVE FLASH LIGHTS, STICKS and KUBOTAN keychain DVD.

    "My rotweiller is friendly.
Be concerned about the .45 caliber S&W pointed at your head!"
I'll never understand why women don't understand that a finger or 2, driven deep into an eye socket, will stop any attacker!
Particularly if she bends that finger, upon removal, and jerks an eyeball out!

That's not a knife, this is a knife. No, seriously though i think pepper spray is the best self defense weapon. Along with being conscious of your surroundings and looking people in the eye not shying away from them etc. Some people say knives or baton etc. but with pepper spray i can stand 10 feet away from you and spray you but those other things i have to close on you and be in you reach to use them. If you do buy pepper spray buy two of the one you will be carrying take it in your backyard and spray it and see how far it goes what kind of pattern it has etc so you know when you need it and are not surprised. You don't want to be thinking it will go 15 feet when it will only go ten or whatever. good luck. Not to mention carrying guns and knives is illegal in many places.

I have thunder & lightning - my two fists. But seriously, avoiding a bad situation like the plague is key. If you have no choice, then pull out your cellphone call 9-1-1 and if you do get hurt try to remember the attackers so you can give the police the description when they do come. If you are able to over power the attacker, hold them till the police arrive so you can file a report.

RE- the Best weapon to have is the one you have in your hand.
That puts a sturdy Cane at the top of the list. As far as pepper sprays, they have several disadvantages. While you are fumbling around for your pepper spray, the attacker will be busy. In a windy area they may be inefective. Multiple attackers could be a problem. Lastly, I have heard of fellons spraying each either with Pepper sprays to de-sensitize themselves.
A mention was made of Kubotan type key chains. My Kubotan has all my Keys and a bottle opener on it. My Kubotan is in my hand often. :-)

I don't see knowledge as self-defense at all.....
