...slr...i think once you use the slr it's hard to go back to the compact...for me anyway....i'm usually travelling pretty light but always have room for my camera.
The first major difference between SLRs and digital compact cameras is what prevents most people from buying an SLR
See I was sooo tempted to get a slr but as I'm a novice and going travelling I decided on a compact, for convenience mostly, maybe live to regret that decision but my compact does have a full manual control so it could be the best of both worlds
I guess its not about the equipment its more about the passion and love of photography. I personally like Digital Cameras because the picture quality is very good and preset options makes it hell lot of difference plus its light too. You can find latest cameras now on Testfreaks.
DSLR for me. I would prefer carrying some extra weight over taking average quality pictures.
BTW there are some great backpacks and messenger bags that make carrying an SLR and lenses an easy task.
Well it depends where are you traveling but I assume you are referring to globe trekking. I have traveled a lot in Asia, South and North America. So this is my experiences and opinion.
I have both cameras at home, but for traveling I always use a compact one. Just few reasons:
It is so much more practical. It is lighter and easy to fit my kangaroo pocket. When it comes to taking picture it is very quick to unzip point and shoot. On the go, there are occasions when you have to react quickly otherwise a "perfect moment" has gone.
I use to take my valuable things always with me. I mean everywhere, even on toilet . I never leave things in my room. This includes camera too. It would be very impractical to carry a big SLR on every step. And just in case if camera would be stolen, it won't heart you so much (on your wallet) if this would be a compact one.
Regarding quality. If you need photos for exposition, to write a travel book ... well there is no dilemma. But if you are taking photos for your own pleasure, to show them to your family, friend or in local community then a compact camera will do the job.
Remember it is not the camera that does the whole trick. It is your eye and hand that makes a perfect shoot. Give a compact camera to a Pro and give a Pro camera to amateur and you will see whose photos will be more capturing.

Do you think the Polaroid camera should be brought back into use?Digital cameras have done away w/ the need for film, but there is still no on- the- spot "hard copy" like that of the Polaroid print.Should the system be re-introduced to the photography market?

An Excellent Digital Camera?I want to start using pictures that I have taken instead of constantly using pics from the internet. Can you recommend an excellent Digital Camera. One you have used. Include brand and model. (as you know, what we read about in Ads are not necessarily what we get). Thanks
