we human beings as a species are ageing. in most developed countries the number of aged is increasing compared to the young, and developing nations are slowly follow that way. will the growth pyramid upturn?

will we as a species is going to get extinct?

I think it is cyclical, once the age sex pyramid is reversed, then slowly society will replenish itself meaning people will populate the earth once more. Do we ever know what is the maximum capacity of the earth? I don't know but there is a concept called "sustainable development" making a balance of the resources and the population.

Lastly I don't think the end is near. This is just a hunch.

The only Certainty in life ... is death.

All those born, must die ... and death is not the end of a Species ... death is, so that others can live ... its not a pyramid, of life ... Life hath been Ordained by The One ... Who hath the Power to Ordain Life ...

All the Created, have to live, for the Ordained Duration ... regardless of any external or internal factors, or influences whatsoever.

See it from a differentperspective. Aging societies always reach a point in that suddenly plenty jobs are available. This creates safety for the young generation so that they will have then more children.

If you make some reasearch about the demographics in the western world since the industrial revolution you will see that it is not new.

What you see in developing countries has another reason. In most of these countries retirement systems do not exist and so the own children are the retirement insurance, they will pay for their parents and so people need many children.

Once these nations install retirement systems like the western world it will stop.

Certainly also in developing nations the position of women is still not good, they are not equal and in many nations polygamie does exist.

So a man has 4-40 wifes, and women do not have the education nor the rights to become part of the labor process. They are forced into the position of a child producing factory.

But the more a country develops , the more rights will be established for women and so step by step the situation will change.

Just think that also in the western world it was very common that just 200 years ago women gave birth to 10-12 children.

The end is near... yes... but why worry? we have God! He sent His Son Jesus to rescue humanity from eternal death... and by believing in Him, we will surely be saved from that end... if the end is near, we'll then say hello to eternal life!

We are ageing because science allows us to live longer. Our population will peak at around 9 billion - this in no way suggests that we'll die out as a species though!

People now have fewer children, it's a trend seen as medicine improves and populations become urbanised. However, this hasn't stopped populations to decline in almost all countries in the world.

The idea that the world population will become too big for the planet we live in is also a fallacy. It turns out that Malthus was wrong; yield goes up quicker than population.

There is on another problem(in addition to inverting age pyramid)-Unemployment, which is rising. Malthus may be wrong, Production may keep up or indeed may be more, but the problem of affording the food arise.............. Hunger because people can't buy enough food!

But when you look at the rate at which individual wealth is increasing, this doesn't look like a problem either. For example, India - containing approx 1/5th of the world's population's economy grew by 9% last year in a year of global downturn.

Food costs have dropped remarkably in the long term, though they've increased a little recently with oil prices going up. This probably means a switch to alternative fuels - this is already well under way.

Icreased yield has the advantage of bringing down food costs correspondently, supply and demand!

I agree with you wealth of 'some' people are increasing.
Your example India- yes the number of millionaires are increasing so are the poor. Also the difference between poor and rich are increasing, and the middle class shrinking.
Unemployment- there is one more factor that contribute- technology. Now less and less people are needed to the same work or even more work. Even if food is more, people cannot buy it!!
Again when the food prices decreases less and less companies or people who goes into food production ...

superwagsposted 13 years agoin reply to this

The number of poor in India has fallen from 50% of population to 25% of the population over the past 25 years or so. The rate at which people are being pulled out of poverty is faster now than it's ever been - despite global recession (actually their economy increased 9% last year). India is a relatively slow burner compared to must developing countries too because of the vast population.

There's no evidence that worldwide employement has decreased - they just shift to service sectors etc. And as I say, as we all get richer, the more resilient we are to economic downturn over short periods. Welfare systems grow up and infrastructure improves. Technology drives a very small number of people out of work compared to the opportunities it opens up for employment. At least this is what has happened every time up til now.

If you're wanting to look further at these statistics then check out www.gapminder.org. It's brilliant, and actually fun statistics. Otherwise here's its creator on population growth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTznEIZRkLg , follow the other videos around it for more by this guy...

If you had read the OP!! I am assuming that no asteroid or climate change will occur in the next 10000 years.
The question is, will our species collapse due to its own weight?
