   Sparks of change in the Middle East make me wonder why U.S. people are so complacent about the economic crisis that deregulation of banking and investing caused the world.  Why are they not holding there representatives in the Congress and Senate responsible and demanding jail time for those who willfully caused such hardship all over the world?  Why are states, now bankrupt, not suing the banks and legislators responsible?  Was the middle class in the U.S. just an aberration, a brief dream proven unworkable?  How can we make real change in the U.S. to benefit the world?

      First, the toppling governments in those worlds are unrelated to any financial issues in the US, and second, we have no idea if what comes in place of those going out will be better or worse.
      
      Third, if we were to hold those accountable for creating this mess, it would repudiate the Democrat party platform, because all this originated there.

         So true we don't know what will happen, we can hope that it's something better for the people of those nations.  However, we U.S.ers do have a history of supporting factions favorable to us.  I wonder how long we will stay out of these possibilities. 
         
         Actually the Regan government started deregulation.  Unfortunately the the only Democrat we've had as President, Carter, did nothing to mend these legislative laws that allowed the banks to send us into this world crisis and ruin the U.S. as a world power.  The legislature controlled by the Democrats, too, did not head the warnings given by financial experts, but instead let us slide into crisis. 
         
         As long as U.S. people are inactive, sitting on there asses, we will continue down hill.  As long as the Republican Party allows itself to be hijacked by the Tea Party and other right-wingers and seeks to stop legislation, we will suffer.  We need to let these selfish !!!!!s know with letters, phone calls, demonstrations and voting them out of office, that we want our country back.  I fear it's too late, as so much of our debt is owned by China.
         
         I'd hoped to spark a discussion about why people don't act for change more readily in the U.S. with the emphasis on how to change that.

         I see it totaly differently. In fact--the complete opposite.
         
         De-Regulation and Privitization...those are the culprits, and last I looked, that came from Saint Ronnie, or maybe Kissbutt Kissinger, or maybe CIA HW Bush, or maybe some Boss from a whole other country....we don't know.
         All I know is that crap ruined America. It then became "Us" and "Them".
         Those failed ideological policies needs to go faster than you can say 9/11.

      We recently had elections where  a great deal of change took place. For "jail time" you need to prove a law has been broken. The economic crisis isn't as simple and did not develop in the neat narrative you want to believe.

      The people are complacent because they don't understand what is happening and why. The people who's at fault has made a lot of money over the last decade and use that money to control information feed to the American people. The blame has been put on the current Administration and the Democrats. You would think that the people know better. Many American don't know what to think or say without some radio or tv. personality telling them what to think and what they should do everyday. The people are divided by mis and dis information and are turned against each other. If those who know and understand what's happening could solve that problem, which they can't without the power of money, we could take our country back.

I also believe that people who don't write threads or hubs on hugpages and only write comments in support of one curtain political party express nothing more than political bias. For what reason did you join hubpages?

   we are all frogs in the same pan of water,...
   
   a frog in a cool pan of water will sit there while you turn the stove on and slow but sure, on degree at a time, bring him to a boil and kill him,... if you threw that same frog into a pan of hot water he would jump right out to give you what i can only imagine wqould be pissed off frog look, saying some thing like "you think i'm just gona sit there and cook?"
   
   this analogy is used to explain why a woman stays with a man who beats her until one day he finaly kills her,..."i surivd today, tomorow cant get much worse",.. and every day, it does get worse,.. in small almost imperceptabe ways,... so small she doesnt notice,... untill his hands are wrapped aroud her throught and her last gasp of air is spent in realizing she was wrong, but its too late.
   
   we americans, ALL OF US, to one degree or another, are just frogs in the same pan of water,... a couple of us might complain every now and then, but our peers tell us to shut up,... some of us might even jump out, but to where?,.. the old addage about the frying pan and the fire comes to mind,...
   
   this is the american dream my fellow frogs,... and were being stewed in it.

         not to sound fanatical, but i'm not sure the american people as a whole have the patience brains and fortitude for anything other than a "hit rock bottom and start all over again" aproach.
         
         i hope like hell i'm wong, but it just feels like something akin to anarchy is coming,... and the best some of us can do is survive it.
         
         dont miss understand, i'm not saying that cities will burn, and people will be crucified on light poles ala the book of revelations,... i'm just saying that chaos clenses,... and i think its the only tool that this generation is going to be able to use.
         
         sad, i know, but thats where we are,.... no one gets a book deal and apearance on oprah for corecting thier lifes mistakes before they became an awe inspiring train wreck.

                  and i firmly believe that the champaign back-strokers will NOT survive as well as they think,... when i envison coming un done,... i mean a near compleet break down of the system they opperate in,... like dinosaurs trying to navigte detroit,.... they will not survive without the system they will kill.

   I hope all of you contributing to this thread will take as much time to contact your representatives, protest, etc. as you are responding here.  I think we all have answers to the original question.  Mine is that lack of funding for education as gotten us here; uninformed people make poor decision-makers.  If we had a truly educated population, on which a democracy depends, we might not have let deregulation of the banks/loans happen.  There are sources of good information, Democracy Now on TV and radio, Thom Hartmann on the web.  Even with good sources, it's difficult to keep informed and be active.  I see so much of the energy that young people have go to doing evil and stupid things, when it could be directed to good.  I remember being a teenager and young adult.  Many of us worked hard to stop the Vietnam War; it took a long time to end.  Now we have a country where we are just above Cuba in the rating of health care we provide our population.  Our children receive a poor education compared to other developed countries. There is so much that need to change.
   
   Bring these issues to your churches, temples and other organizations.
