I am wondering if anyone knows of specific style rules we could refer to for attributions, crediting photographers and so forth?  Any hubs on the subject? (Guess I should go and search myself!)

K.D. , I am certain hubbers have written articles on the subject, crediting photographers or giving credit where credit is due is the right thing to due on HP. Whenever you open a picture capsule, video etc, their is a caption where you can notate your credits. smile

Credits are best placed within the caption field, alternately, one could create a text box with all attributions.

Simply crediting your source does not make it ok, you  should in fact have permission to use a photo as hubs are commercial in nature

avoid the drama and use photos from creative commons which explains licensing and attribution very easily and clearly

      http://creativecommons.org/

the firefox install usually includes creative commons in the dropdown search

Marisa and sunforged make excellent points.

However, I'm (assuming) that HubPages is located in the USA. In that case, your Hubs are held to the rules of current copyright/left law in that jurisdiction.

There aren't any set rules for this on HubPages.

If you use photos from sites like Flickr, you are required to make the attribution using a hyperlink to their photostream - and you can't do that in a caption.  So I generally put the attribution at the end of the Hub ("photo of ... thanks to .... on Flickr", with their name being a live link).

Funny you should mention crediting photographers. I wrote a hub on that line of thought yesterday.

I really need to find a good way to do this on my Hubs. I don't do it at the time because I don't want to "clutter" the Hub. But its my responsibility to give credit where its due, I suppose, so soon I'll be adding something to my Hubs thanking various people for taking awesome pictures.

I appreciate you pointing this out, all.

Absolutely, GM - I'm sure you'd hate it if someone quoted your writing and didn't credit you, right there and then!

You can always group your credits together in a links capsule.  Like I said, I always add it at the end of my Hub - I usually have a line saying "Copyright Marisa Wright, photos courtesy of..."

I have a little tip that will give you some more search engine traffic with google images, take your own pictures and even credit them to yourself.  These days with digital cameras it is very easy to do so.

      Thanks again for that tip!

I do take a lot of photos for my hubs..but I've not a car or good scenery around here for a lot of things I write about.

But you're right...get a digital camera and take pix!

If anyone has trouble doing this..let me know. I sold cameras for three years, and I'm more than willing to help you with either photography or getting a pic on a computalator.

      Cheers,

      G|M

Like Marisa said Flickr is a good place to find creative commons photos you can hyperlink back to and give credit.  Since you have expertise with cameras you should write a hub about it too.
