    ICANN Approves 'XXX' Domains

is this a good idea? should there be an xxx domain allowed on the 'net...will it lead to more abuse of women and children? The board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the creation of ".xxx" Internet domains on Friday.

The agency, which oversees the Internet's naming system, has made the decision after a decade-long battle over the ".xxx" registry.

Religious groups say that giving adult websites their own corner of the Internet legitimizes the content.

Pornographers fear governments could try to mandate the domain's use so that pornographic content is more easily blocked.

Diane Duke, executive director of the adult entertainment industry's Free Speech Coalition (FSC), said in a statement that ICANN has "disregarded overwhelming outpouring of opposition from the adult entertainment industry" and dismissed the "interests of free speech on the Internet."

I may be mistaken, but at this time, they are not required to have that address.

Oh boy, someone has brought this up! As someone who has a few adult affiliate sites I know all about this and what it means. Allow me to inform you just what it REALLY is about.

The person who pushed to have this done owns the sole company who will be able to sell the .xxx names. Nobody else.

They have spent over 12 million dollars to get this through, and have done many things that seem a bit,,,, sneaky to say the least.

The domains will be sold for 60 bucks a pop! Normal domains cost around 10 bucks.

You are not required to use .xxx for adult, you can use any of the .com .net and so on names, and they do.

NO current adult sites will give up their current .com sites. However they will buy their brand names in .xxx just to protect their brand name.

So that means double the amount of adult sites on the net. Newbies will see the .xxx as a new gold rush and make many new adult sites, flooding the net with even more.

Adult webmasters do not want it. Religious leaders do not want it. The ONLY person who benefits from this is the guy who pushed it.

There will now be double the amount of porn sites on the net for kids to find. Kids now have an easy way to find porn, just go right to .xxx!

So, all of this will just make it EASIER for kids to find adult sites, increase the number of adult sites by millions, cost adult webmasters much more and make the religious ones mad that there is now more adult sites.

It was all done by one man so he could make millions while screwing everyone else. It's all about money, nothing more, and we are all going to pay for it.

There is not one good thing about this. It's still not over in fact. There now will be years of legal fights about it. It is one big mess!   mad mad

Any benefits to the xxx domains?  Sole ownership is a concern - called a monopoly - would ICANN support this?

Monopoly support is a real concern to Internet freedom.  Please tell me this is not true!

"Monopoly support is a real concern to Internet freedom.  Please tell me this is not true!"

Yes it is true, only one company can sell domain names with the .xxx extension. Even more proof that the votes were bought. sad

Don't you think it'll be easy for web filters to block .xxx domains ? In case of other domains, it takes more effort for them to filter adult sites.

True, however that does nothing about all the other adult sites currently on .com, .net and the others. It is NOT required to use .xxx.

No adult site now will give up their other sites, that would be stupid. Yet they are buying their brand name in .xxx to protect it.

Plus all the newbies who are dumb think this is a wide open adult wild west now, rushing to get a .xxx site thinking it's easy money when in fact it's not at all.

So again, the result is just doubling the amount of adult sites on the net, while actually helping kids zero in on adult sites by that big red target, the .xxx!

Even if it was required, who is to say what site is adult? I can find pictures of naked girls on facebook and youtube. Should they all be under .xxx?

Softcore, hardcore, artistic, erotic text, cartoons, who is the judge of what crosses the line? It's a bad, bad idea. hmm

TLD domains are being opened up left and right.

It is now possible to buy and sell any TLD that you want to run. If you can afford the rights to do so.

Expect to see all sorts of TLD's opening up this year. I even know of quite a few that are currently giving out free domains and some that will only allow very select people to register such as

    .wine

I dont give a damn about the porn, porn built the net

True again sunforged, but with .xxx is was one that NOBODY wanted, not even the group it was suppose to be for. It was made only to make money for the one guy who pushed it, knowing current site owners would get their name in .xxx just to protect their brand.

      It's extortion. hmm

well so was .co, by that logic

I expect as all these TLD's open up - the concept of own every possible TLD for your brand may die out - and brands will just start suing for registration of their brand name

I know ebay sent me c&d's when i opened up my first domains!

      great idea!

      hell of an extortion sale!

just get some investors and a half mil downpayment and you can open your own TLD!

Actually it kind of makes sense for the .xxx to exist.  Perhaps what other people in the porography industry should do is sue the guy who has a monopoly on .xxx registry.
