Why is it that politicians simply cannot help but look after themselves and not the voters, is this part of 'human nature'?
Yes its part of human nature... power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely! This is why we must push for term limits... this will limit time in power and the opportunity to be corrupted by the system!
Only for the selfish and greedy does that apply.
Term limits isn't going to reduce corruption from happening and to think it would is completely irrational.

People in power have a tendency to abuse that power and to feel that different rules apply to them.
Therefore spending less time in power equates to less abuse. You wont eliminate it but you can minimize it. Who is more likely to be corrupt and to a greater degree the congressman with a six year term limit or the career congressman with 40 years of seniority? Ask Charlie Tangle.
Of course they have a tendency to abuse, it's because they are selfish and greedy, as I said.
Of course spending less time in power equates to less abuse, because it equates to spending less time spent on abusing. That's common sense.
I guess we have different faiths in humanity.
The term limit on a congressman in such as a six year limit, will only mean that they will have to be more deceitful in their actions, in order to get more out of less time. That's all.
No thank you.
It's called selfishness and greed, which is part and parcel of human nature.
How ironic it is that almost all of them are religious in some capacity.
I'd like to see all sizable donations to politicians and political parties outlawed (by constitutional amendment, if necessary).
I also don't believe that politicians should be allowed to ever be employed by any business or entity that had any issues before the legislative body on which he/she served.
Separate the money from the process and we'd get more honest decisions out of our lawmakers.
"Wisconsin elects its Supreme Court justices, but the court’s four conservative justices –including Gov. Scott Walker’s embattled ally Justice David Prosser — all voted to reject an ethics rule that would have prevented them from hearing cases involving their major campaign donors. Instead, the conservative justices enacted a rule written by powerful corporate lobbyists."
...and the beat goes on.
The situation in Japan gets worse by the hour but in the U.S. only local pols are calling for a review of our own aging nukes. Look at the list of who gets lobby $ from them (in both parties).
As I said in another thread -- as unbelievable as it may seem, I don't think things are dire enough yet for people to demand real change.
Too bad.
You have to have a certain personality type to be attracted to politics in the first place, for starters.
Not very many "Mr. Deeds" (not Ralph or Paul, the movie) actually go to Washington. To be elected, you have to believe that you represent your constituency better than anyone else can. That's a pretty egotistical proposition right there.
Is it any wonder that when you start with such delusions of grandeur that power goes to your already swelled head?
From "I know what's best for MY people" they progress to learning the ropes. The ropes get greased by interest groups with deep pockets. You gotta pay to play.
If you don't learn the rules, you can't do the job you were elected to do. But you can't reveal or buck the rules, either, or you'll be ousted.
I'm with Hugh Williamson on this one. Separation of church and state and separation of business and state.
The first thing let's do, let's kill all the lobbyists
(No, I'm not being a violent liberal, I'm borrowing from Shakespeare ).
