It is a magical sensation. More powerful than any drugs. My lucidity is my new drug! I can feel my emotions, my body, my free thought. I can live fully every day and enjoy every moment. For me is the better gift that I am do to myself.

I had a young guy working for me many years ago who grew up with drug parents, both dealer and junky.  His first memory is the police lifting him out of his cot to get the stash his mother had hidden under his mattress.  He was calm and intelligent about the whole situation but his advice to other friends was that the parents (anyone at that advanced stage) would never change so make a new relationship with them and look after your own life.

The advice of "recommended1" is a good advice. The conquest of sobriety is a personal journey, you can not do it instead of another person. You can only be close to this person but if this puts you in trouble, because ruins your balance or because prevents you from growing, it is better focusing on your own life. In any case you would no be able to help.
The first step is awareness. Without awareness there is no journey. I wrote a Hub on this subject, maybe it can be useful to understand the important role of awareness.
I know this is not the advice you are looking for....

To be truly "clean and sober" it means no drugs OR alcohol.Clean sober means living without any mood altering substances and living with the ability to cope and deal without altering your emotions and lastly these words represent a way of living including serenity and spiritual growth often, ultimately happiness and contentment.  The opposite being 'dry' like white knuckling while trying not to drink or get high.

I have never used drugs past the first juvenile try except tobacco which was seen as 'innocent' then, and I have not been even remotely drunk for over 40 years.  I can only imagine how it would be to live each day in a haze of self centred misery or having to take stuff to get happy.

I'm not addicted to alcohol or drugs, except for nicotine. That's bad enough, so I can't imagine what it might be like to be addicted to "hard" drugs. I know a couple of people who are, and I swear, they'd sell their kids to get another "fix." One of them is about to lose his home because he's spending all his money on his drug of choice instead of making his mortgage payments. Sad.
