HubPages To Charge for Forum Posts ??

    Hi,

A little bird told me that HubPages are considering charging Forum Users for the amount of space that they take up when they reply to Forum posts, and quote screen after screen of someone elses comments above their own one line contributions.

This makes the forums very hard to read, as it's hard to pick out your little nugget of truth out of the screenfulls of quotes, requotes, re-requotes, and re-re-requotes of other peoples stuff.

This practice is clogging up the hub pages servers, and I have it on good authority that a fee is being considered for this waste of hub pages resources. The fee will be deducted from your HubPages earnings.

So - just in case this is true, here's how to avoid paying this fee.

When you click quote/reply on a forum post, remove all of the stuff that is not relevant to your reply. People who are following a thread don't need to keep wading through what everyone else has posted.

Use your brains. If you are making a comment about a post which appears on the same page, it's not usually necessary to quote any of the original comment.

If you're making a comment on something that appeared several pages back, usually a few sentences of the original post is sufficient.

    Yours,
In the interests of saving you money -
and reducing the wear and tear on PG DN keys,
    Eric G. :-)

After seeing some of the threads that have been posted here in the forums lately you wonder if there is any of that left...
Eric you're positively right. Thumbs up to you for pointing it out here.

You may want to add a disclaimer or something. Certain parts of the community never evolved irony genes and may take this seriously.

Unfortunately - this is probably your target audience. wink

I think that was a technical glitch. Pretty good though - I have never seen quite that many in one go - but I couldn't work out how to clean it up and still keep the quotes from the other thread:(

That happens to me a lot, too. I once had something on a forum that was so cut and pasted that it couldn't be read. But if I didn't crop it, it would have looked like the one of yours that Maddie linked to!

      Agreed 100%

There is nothing more irritating than having someone reply to an uber long post.

What's worse is when someone replies to someone's reply of an uber long post. You know what I mean?

Maybe it's a good hub idea- forum etiquette at hubpages.

If I may humbly add to the list of forum no-no's, it would be to hit the enter key after every sentence or two.

This is generally how most forum posts get to be too long- too many enter keys are hit too frequently.

VERY good point, WC! I think it would make a great hub. I'm willing to write it. Might be good for me considering that I'm a culprit who writes exceptionally long forum posts in general.

I would like to add that the quoted point of yours applies to anywhere that we write, be it on a forum, in an e-mail or in one of our hubs. I have just as much trouble reading a hub that is made up of very short paragraphs as I do with reading a hub that is made up of huge blocks of text.

        Thank you for the reminder!

No. Like I said in the original post - that's what your brain is for.

@Maddie - I didn't consider Mark as my target audience - but thanks to your research skills, he is now lol

            @Blondepoet:
Calm down - no need to fill your keyboard with sticky fluids.
I wasn't saying anything about the length of someone's response to a forum post - just the problems caused when a poster includes replies to a post, and includes someone ELSE'S huge responses.

            @Whitney:
Although HP can't directly take money from you, they theroretically  COULD juggle the precentage of advert impressions that you receive, and indirectly charge you that way :-)
(But I'd take a guess that this wouldn't be popular.
            How's THAT for understatement smile

      About the fees - No.
About deleting the unnecessary bits? - Yes.

You do realize that HP doesn't pay us right, so there isn't an actual HubPage earnings? Google, Amazon, Ebay, and Kontera pay, so HP wouldn't be able to take money away, unless they charged and it was all out of our pocket.

So, to answer your question, no it wouldn't take from HP earnings. It would add to it.

It's about time this was brought up. I was going to a few times, in fact I do believe I mentioned to a certain J.U. that great big slabs of text need not be quoted every single time. Hit post to reply generally, and if there is something specific you need to reply to so people don't lose track of the conversation, do as Mr Graudins has suggested, delete everything but the bit you're responding to.

It does help bandwidth, but it also helps readers. It's confusing to see things quoted four or five posts included in the most recent post.

I also need to take into consideration what one hubber (can't remember who!) said about making it a hub if it's long enough to be one! Yikes!
