Does our lives have purpose? Or, how could we live without purpose?

      Hello Peter:
Sure there's a purpose for all life i.e. to procreate, nurture our offspring, survive and enjoy this singular opportunity to experience life.
What, other than that, could there be?
      Qwark

I think the better question is does your life have purpose?

It's not an inclusive club. It's an individual trait.

To give your life purpose is the key. By doing so, you also bestow a meaning for your life. What it means to you and what it means to others.

Purpose for your life cannot be given to you by something else. It is something you have to make up on your own.

Example: a purpose you could give your life is the betterment of humankind. To help humankind improve.

Obviously, you might not be able to help all of humankind, but you don't have to. Just do it on an individual level and you'll make great strides. wink

Individuals have purpose as has been pointed out - but we seem to need an overall purpose as society.  One of the issues with western society is the lack of any percieved overall purpose - which is why loony religions seem to be doing well, loony politics the same.  The 60's were a period of development that had forward momentum and space as a 'new frontier' was a tangible thing that went with it.  Now that western societies are regressing with no real vision of any future except more war and pointless destruction the lack of purpose shows in many ways, one is the type of movies that appear, all backward looking or prequals or rewrites - time for a new idea of the future beyond making the rich richer and government bigger.

    You wonder sometimes dont you,

Without a purpose everything seems a waste of time.  Lately i am re evaluating what my purpose is, and not really coming up with great answers.  I thing it is to write and improve with hub pages, if only i was not so lazy.

That is it, my purpose is to not be so lazy, or is that my goal.

This is proving a hard question.

that makes interesting reading actually, and a good exercise for the brain. Kind of getting back to basics.

Purpose of human life is to be happy. Then society or culture dictates the parameters of happiness. Good education, job, marriage, house, car and some kind of volunteer or selfless service.

I guess without freedom and health their is no peace and happiness or contentment for intelligent human beings. Beyond personal happiness their is the fulfilment of higher needs of Maslow like self-actualization of one's inherent potential, gifts and passions.

In the East the highest purpose of human life  was simple living and spiritual enlightenment, self-realization, cosmic connection or god-realization. Many westerners are embracing it now after getting disillusioned with limitation of happiness through materialist consumption or accumulation.

Human life has a purpose. Mostly to realize your true potential. I believe we come to the Earth with some mission, some people are aware of what it is and some are not. Some may actually be able to discover their purpose later in life while some won't. I have figured out mine, have you figured out yours?
