Would U Go For A Career U Love Or Choose A No Brainer Job With Big Pay

   I have been constantly busy lately because I have been studying and researching to create articles for a website. I love the job but the pay is not enough. To be honest, I was insulted when they offer me the pay, I mean with all due respect we all know what we can do and cannot do. The guys who offered me this job is outside my country and they clearly do not have any idea with the cost living. I took the job because I was thinking it will pay off someday. I believe that we all work for God not man. There must have been a good reason why God gave it to me.
   
   Just yesterday, My uncle is now seating in the throne. I won't discuss where and what but he offered me the job of being his Personal Assistant. The pay here is doubled than what I am getting now. That does not include the weekly perks, a laptop and a car will be issued in my name after six months. To make it short it will make my dreams come true.
   
   I am caught between the two because the first one is all about growth and the other one is all about dreams.
   
   What to do, hubbers?

   In this economy, and in view of the fact that someone in another country thinks working for less is fine; I'd go for the money (as long as I could assure myself I wouldn't regret getting involved with working for a family member).

   Sheena- Although money is certainly an important consideration but still if you don't have the passion or liking for it then it is difficult to sustain oneself doing it for a long time. I mean work is one of the few things we do at least 7-9 hours a day. And to do it day in and day out without really loving it would seem very stressful. I know it is a tough economy and money is important. I hope you do think from all angles. Sometimes what is easy for us may not be good for us and what is good for us may not be easy for us. Sometimes what is good in the short run may not really be good in the long run too. Just discuss your specific situation with professional counselor or a senior career person. I sincerely hope you get paid (for what you deserve to get paid) and love your life(with a wonderful work/personal life).
   
   PS: Sometimes some folks promise the moon but deliver little be wary of such folks. Good luck my friend

   At this stage I'd probably go for a no brain job with big pay so that I'll have energy to continue my writing in the evenings.

   Go for the dream. Let's face it, how do you know what's around the corner? The 'dream' job may well offer growth someway down the line.

   Sheena, this is how it shook out for me.  I wanted to be a musician.  It tried to be a musician for many years with small success and little pay, but in the end I had to choose between my dream and my greater needs.  I do not regret the time I spent trying to be a musician and I do not regret moving on from that dream to embrace another dream, albeit a more pragmatic dream. 
   
   I have some practical questions:
   
   Do you get along with your uncle?
   Do you think your uncle will make a good boss?
   Will your hours be reasonable?

      I appreciate your response. Yes, I like my Uncle and I do get along well with him. Frankly speaking, I'm spending more hours in my current job. With my Uncle the hours would be reasonable. He has always been a good boss, very generous and he always wants to help people especially the family.
      
      He likes my attitude about work and appreciates what I do. Easy to please and highly educated. I think, my mind is a bit clearer now. We would both compliment each other in regard with work. He can help me reach my dreams and I can represent him well. He specifically ask for me because of my skill and the loyalty which will be natural since I am family. He holds a very important position and he cannot just trust anybody.
      
      It's just disheartening on my part to leave the company now when I know they need me. But then again, that is just my point of view. The person they trusted here in the Philippines is Dick and the investors outside the country haven't even seen me. They never knew I was here from the very beginning they've set up this company. They never knew, I acted as a consultant for their business and did their Human Resource. I did all that for free. I think in a way, I wanted to help them since they invested on Filipino people. I want them to know that every single cent was worth it. What they know now is I do their SEO/Marketing stuff.

   I think that it is never a good idea to work for a family member.  Just as I have been told to never cosign a car loan for a family member, I would advise you to let the niceties go of the lap top or the car.  You do not sound like you really want to work for the rich uncle because you are hesitating by asking hubbers of their opinions. Your final answer has to be your own.  Though hubbers can advise you even to see a career counselor or a therapist, you are going to have to live with your decision. I think that you may regret not hanging in there with the other company that is your "growth" industry.  Your growth industry is all about what you bring to the table and not reliant upon your uncle who sits upon the throne.
   
   If you leave this company where I believe where your heart is and follow the emptiness of a job because of the niceties, you may lose your way. You said that you know that you work for God and not man.  You answered your own question.  If you have to ask others for advice, you are following your own will and not who you say you work for.  Read all of the comments but be mindful that when you asked the forum for advice, you had already decided to stay with the "growth" company.
   
   A family member altercation could easily cause you to lose your job because family is the ties that bind.  The company you are working for now is dependent on your writing talents and you have done alright before your "good job" distraction came along. Only you can make the choice because you have to live with your decision while hubbers empathize and continue to read and write hubs.

   both my children can do the call center jobs or be they can be nurses but they chose 'unpopular' courses and i let them.  i think it does not have to be more about money but doing what you love best because eventually you will be making a lot of money for doing what you love best.
