I guess it's allowed here?  Please flame me if not.  I'm not being negative but...

Just been hopping.  Usual crop of brain numbing poorly written incoherent insult to the intelligence.  I do not understand how these people have the brass neck to put their stuff on a writing site when they couldn't draw up a shopping list.

Added to this every so often one of them pops up in the forums and says "why have I been flagged" or "what does it mean when it says "something so obvious a three year old would understand".

This is a total waste of time.  What is the point in spending our time and HP moderating this stuff when it should never have been published in the first place?

You might as well moderate everything FIRST before it gets out there.

I don't pick up everything - no one can.

So the sheer weight of utter crap, and I am being polite to the nonsenical, inaccurate waste of time tripe that these wasters keep loading, cannot be to the benefit of HP.

    Good.

I feel slightly better.  It's nice to share.  Usual caveats I love HP, love writing, just don't like wading through you know what.. whoops I'm off again.

    Thanks Case.

Here's an example, because there are plenty on here who will say they never see any problems.

"Much more pelt at open public limbs generally is a excellent way to obtain embarrassment. Getting this done invitations unfriendly stares plus in types occurrences heading shirtless turns to hard"

If you Hop then PLEASE do something when you come across this rubbish.  Otherwise we have no chance... and we don't deserve one.

I am not a mean person, if it looks like they are trying, or genuine I tend to leave it.  But in five minutes I found about 20 pages, plus authors who churn this stuff out.

Tip: Use the Hubs Latest and check out people publishing hub after hub within minutes of each other.  Chances are it's total spun rubbish.  Why doesn't HP limit us to three a day or something?

You make an excellant point questioning how on earth some ,ok I'll say stupid work ever gets past the moderation mark.

Its a bit like closing the barn door after the horse has bolted-so to speak.

I usually hop on average 5-20 hubs per week and flag or vote up accordingly. I used to leave comments on many ,but now I guess Ive been a bit more selective.

Mark, that's a good idea to refer people to the hub latest. However,Hub hopping and flagging doesn't seem to tackle the problem of previously published crap. This is surely the time for a team of super elites to take centre stage. You may well be called upon to rid the world of this menace. By the way, you really should have commented on some of my incredibly witty personal stories by now. I refer you to "why I am scared of mice", for starters. Like you, I make no money. But hey.

See, I'm not talking about the amateur self obsessed nonsense or general rubbish on here - most of which is written by me - but the real garbage - the nonsense copied spun content that clogs up the web and is why traffic is down.

Now, I understand we aren't all here to make money but then what are we here for?  To get read?  Surely that is at least the point.  I mean if you want to write a diary then write a diary.

But if you want some readers, some traffic - then we need a helping hand from Google.  And I couldn't honestly say that a site with this sort of rubbish should have a reader anywhere near it.

    Could you?

My biggest problem is that because there is no review before publication and there are so many of these people (not writers) publishing low quality crap hubs in comparison to how many good Hubs are being published daily, we really need all Hubbers to flag as many of these low quality hubs as possible.

At some stage HP may decide to review hubs before publishing but until then if we want HP to be around for a while we must all help eradicate the crap!

I think we all prefer reading good quality material, whether it be books, hubs or some other form of writing. Presumably all of the Hubbers that have been active on HP for any length of time and who have a few decent hubs and a reasonable hubscore also enjoy writing and getting traffic to their hubs.

If we do not get rid of the low quality crap that is being churned out we may all end up having to look for another writing platform. Come on Lorie - even if its only for 10 minutes a day - please do your bit to help make HP a great place to publish your writing!

Why not prevent it in the first place?  HP stated they wanted to give everyone a fair chance by letting them publish hubs first and then have us try and find the worst ones for flagging.

This invites disaster by allowing spinners and spammers free reign with the system while we, the members, have to waste our time reading and flagging them.  I think I will quit hopping this garbage until HP finally wakes up to the reality that we should not have to clean up the mess they could easily prevent.

It would really be great if there was a staff member with enough courtesy and honesty to converse with the members concerning this ridiculous policy.  It has to be about the money because it surely does not make sense otherwise.

I would volunteer to help newcomers out by checking out their  first hubs before allowing them to publish, as perhaps many other veteran Hubbers would.  Anything but more of this same idiotic system.  SSSSSSSSS!  Steam or hissing-take your pick!

But in all honesty, newbies might look at those hubs and think that if HP are publishing them, that must be the standard expected of writers.

And if that is the standard expected, well, tomorrow I might have 1000 hubs up!

  16. IzzyM profile image87
    IzzyMposted 12 years ago

I hubhop every day, but the sheer volume of new hubs published every hour is incredible. Hats off to the team if they can get through all that.
I think maybe it's time they introduced some kind of cap on what  can be published, at least until the author has shown they can write something worthwhile.
And on a side note, there are many great hubs being published but whose titles really let them down. They will miss traffic because of it.
It would be nice if there was some kind of system in place to actively encourage the good writers.
We all know there is once we have been here a couple of months - hubnuggets are just one example. The first time I got nominated I was over the moon, but then had to go and learn what hubnuggets actually were!
Maybe some kind of basic training course put in place? One that would keep the spammers and spinners of this world out, and be useful to the writers and the wannabe writers.

I don't mind doing  my part and hub hopping daily but quite  honestly I'm sick of all the garbage. There is just such an abundance of stuff that should NEVER be published in the first place so put something into effect to stop the trash from getting out there. There's still articles with minimal word count, etc., stop it in the first place so I don't have to keep going through and flagging everything.  Isn't this making more work for everyone?

I'm in a speak-my-mind kind of mood today and since you've invited us to let off steam...I feel I should do so.

I don't really have any complaints as far as traffic or Adsense being affected through all the changes..I have been fortunate enough to not experience much of a concern in this department.
What I am sooooooo tired of is a handful of hubbers that I'd like  to shake up a little or put them in a maze and see if they can find their way out all on their own because they need their hand held through everything.

One hubber says she doesn't have time to read through the forums or find the answers because she's too busy...well, apparently your time is more valuable than mine because I at least try to make an effort to  find answers to things.

There is another hubber who must start 10 different threads a day in here for questions that are all the same thing but worded differently.  really?  REALLY???? Come on!

Then there are the ads...can't understand why people are missing out on money when ads are broken... I understand that these things happen and that they are working hard to fix the problem promptly and I DO appreciate it....I do!  What I really have a problem with is the quality of ads..especially the non-Google ads.  It all started with those HORRIFIC Kroger ads and then came the monster diaper ads and they've gone downhill.  These moving ads on my page that have no relevance whatsoever to the hub are just frustrating.  Fine, I can deal with an ad coming on my hub once in a while that isn't targeted...it's going to happen...but when they're this obnoxious and moving, I just feel they are diminishing the quality of the hub.  I don't have this problem on my websites, I don't understand why this is happening here.

OK..now let's talk about the people who want to make money or are complaining about traffic yet when someone gives them advice to backlink or write for another site that pays up front temporarily, there are complaints because they don't want to invest time.  Don't you get out of things what you put into them?  I'm sorry but if you try to cut corners your whole life you'll keep cutting them till they turn into circles and then where are you....a rat spinning in circles and getting nowhere.  Put forth a little effort or stop whining.  If you ask advice and quality Hubbers give you GREAT advice, take it!  Don't go and ask the same question again in a different way hoping for a different answer that allows you to put forth less effort.

Wow Mark....thanks for inviting us to blow off steam...I so needed that.  I really try to always be the cheerful, bubbly, helpful person but well......the monkey didn't have his banana today. smile

I'm thinking some of the examples that have been provided here are probably by those who do not speak English all that well. What would be best is if there was a HubPages for those who don't speak English to freely write in their language so that they stay off of ours.

What get's me is that a new account holder can publish a 150 word spam sandwich but my 1200+ article gets flagged for a single affiliate link to Market Samurai. I doubt Hubpages even knows what Market Samurai is, they just assume its a low quality product and therefore flag my hub.

Its not like my account has a score of 27 with zero accolades.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you, it's just goddamn rude!

It's no wonder all the veteran hubbers are leaving the platform in droves.

    As for hub hopping.

Forget it! I have lost faith!

Why should I invest my spare time trying to filter out a tsunami of cow chudd only to have one of my best hubs flagged for a quality affiliate link.

Until HP treats high scoring hubbers with a little respect, they can filter this tsunami of spam themselves.

      Hi,
I'm just an old ratbag who stopped actively hubbing and posting about 18 months ago, when there was the same old problem of crap, spammy hubs and HP's main way of getting rid of them was to rely on their members as unpaid moderators to find and flag the garbage.

I agree totally with what you are saying.
There is no evidence that google downgrades a page because of an affilite link.

Regardless of how they are trying to spin it, my opinion is that getting rid of all hubs with affiliate links is being done by HubPages as part of a plan to have their own HPAds program the only way of generating any income here.

      cheers,

Yes, you could be right - it kind of makes sense, in a twisted sort of way.  As well as the affiliate links issue, why else would HP be going after things like "purely personal" content and pixellated images with such force and vigour?  I can't believe that Google cares much about the odd pixellated image one way or the other.  Whereas the people behind the ad program might.

        1. Eric Graudins profile image60
Eric Graudinsposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Exactly. A pixelated image is just a mismatch between the actual size of an image, and a tag telling a browser what size it should be displayed.
No SEO or panda implications at all.
And the "Purely Personal content" reason is also a an absolute joke.
Wonder how long HP wake up to the fact that they are misleading prospective new hubbers by the "Write about ANYTHING" blurb on their signup page :-)
          cheers,
          Eric G.

And surely eminently fixable, by making a right-aligned picture capsule automatically resize itself to the maximum width possible without pixellation, rather than taking up exactly half of the hub width as it does now.

There is a definite disconnect between "what we say" and "what we actually mean" on the part of HP management.  THAT'S what's creating a lot of the anger here, IMO.  It's certainly largely responsible for my feelings of anger anyway.  Ever since I was a child I have always reacted really strongly to this kind of behaviour - it's like a fork scraping across a plate.

Good thread, Mark.  But it caught me on a good day.   I agree with you about the garbage we find while hub hopping.  When I see a bad one, or too good to be true, I'd go to the hubber's profile and see what else they got.  Usually, if one hub is of poor quality, so are the other hubs that the hubber had written and would end up flagging most of them, if not all.  Some are really good and I'd end end up voting them up.  But some are too good to be true because they are.

    Hi Mark,

I came to the conclusion a while ago that the tsunami of idiocracy was so overwhelming that it's become unstoppable.

In fact, it has made me look with new eyes at old fashioned ideas where entrance into various clubs and organisations was reserved for the 'privileged.' Maybe there was some fire in all that smoke. Maybe the idea was to protect something that was worth protecting and over a period of time the idea behind it was lost.

I think, probably, HP cannot do anything about it without checking that every single new writer can actually write and takes care with their work. When thousands of new people are signing up each day, that becomes impossible to do.

The difficulty is that in any business environment these days, to remain competitive, one has, at a certain point, got to begin to treat people like commodities. HP has been absolutely superb in still treating people like human beings, but even they cannot afford the number of staff that it would take to check the quality of every single newbie.

Google, in its effort, to get that kind of thing off the web, is now giving content ranking to those organisations that are members of the Online Publishing Association which means that these organisations hire professional journalists, writers, etc. I cannot see that changing in the near future.

What HP has to do is find a niche which offers something that no one else is currently offering and I believe that they're good enough to be able to lead us there.

Don't give up. Probably do what I'm doing right now. Lying low with regard to writing content, but actively searching where those opportunities are. And if you find them, let HP know. I'm pretty sure that they will follow up on everything valid.

Let's all work together for the good of a fabulous community, even if it is struggling with the tsunami of the bird brained!

I am going to take the chance at venting at the risk of alot criticism probably. You know what irritates me. For the first year and a half here I made peanuts literally...under a buck a month on the average. Then when I finally reach the point of making the Adsense payout on a monthly basis, six months later the Panda change came.

Hubpages and hubbers say they want to clean the place up. Yet, one of our top hubbers here speaks and writes broken English even though it's not that bad. Albeit, the hubber is very nice and polite, but outside of Hubpages, no one else knows that. Regardless of whether a hubber is nice or not, popular or not, the slight misuses of English still reflects on our site. I just don't get it....

Well, the chickens came home to roost. Any system will take a certain degree of abuse, so what happened on the web (as everywhere else) is that a lot of people saw ways of making money by taking short cuts. They didn't have to write correct English. They didn't have to play fair in order to get their stuff to the top of google.  And the thing is that if 10% of the people do that, maybe the system will endure. But when 50% or 60% of people begin to do it, the system collapses. And that's what happened here. Google wasn't happy so Google made sure that a lot of those people who were bending the rules couldn't bend them anymore.

Only, it's an algorithm. Sometimes, there's collateral damage and the some good guys get caught in the fire. And sometimes, some baddies slip through anyway.

      That's life.
