Are infoHubs the way to the future for Hubpages....in order to compete in a crowed market does Hubpages need to get more focused on becoming a place of reference rather than a place of gossip and chit-chat?

Huh?  When did HP ever want Hubs that were about gossip and chit-chat?

It doesn't seem so to me.  Rather, Google has gone a long way down the road of providing searchers a place to buy, to spend money, instead of a place to learn.

While you can certainly find opinions in the political and religious fields (hard to buy anything unless you have a few million to buy a politician) anything concerning material objects or even such things as cities or countries is centered around buying.

It has gotten to the point that I begin to fear for the internet as we know it.  Instead of a place to learn, to gain needed information or a place to research questions it is becoming a vast store with Google providing the signs at the end of each aisle telling us which aisle sells what.  The directions on navigating the library section of the internet are getting harder and harder to find.

Great analyse, right there, commercialisation seems to be the core of an idea (the internet) that was created to provide the world with access to information and communication smile

Unfortunately that's what I'm seeing.  The info hub may go the way of the dodo bird.

It may turn around, but it will take proof to google, in the form of lost business from searchers looking for information.  If Google is right and all anyone wants is a place to buy then that's what the 'net will become and we are lost.

Or maybe Bing, or something else, will become the search engine for information while Google remains the one to use to buy something.  Give it a few years or a decade.  I think the internet is in for a change as big as that which created it.  The growing pains sure hurt, though!

And that could actually be the answer.  A handful of informative sites with something on everything.  No need for google's road signs.
