N. Korea seizes mobile phones to curb news: report

   SEOUL (AFP) – North Korea has started a drive to confiscate mobile phones smuggled from China in an attempt to suppress news from the outside world, a group of defectors from the communist state said.
   North Korea Intellectuals Solidarity said in its latest newsletter police in North Hamkyong and Yangkang provinces bordering Russia and China have started urging residents to voluntarily surrender mobile phones or face punishment.

   I can't imagine how they feel being in constant fear of being imprisoned or worse,for wanting information from the outside world. The citizens of this regime are literally prisoners of this dictator and have no free will. Are we going to "free" them next or does Jim's army have to open fire on the citizens first before we help?

            Maybe they are not so imprisoned as the media would have us believe.  My first girlfriend here in China was a Professor who regularly travelled to N Korea as part of an education exchange programme (there are also school kids who take part in active exchange programmes with N Korean kids coming here).  My gf at that time told me that it was not so different there except less developed and the food was not good.
            
            Maybe the recent efforts by China to get them to open up and develop with Chinese help is the better way to go than the US fleet trolling around in the sensitive waters between China and Korea waving its collective dick about ?

   I have just found the source of this, as usual, biased report.  Visitors to N. Korea are not allowed to take mobile phones into the country with them.  But also any electrical equipment such as radio being taken into the country must be handed in for 'adjustment' to ensure that it can only recieve N. Korean radio or TV.
   
   I am currently trying to get a visa to visit to see for myself, but it appears that I am not allowed in at this time although there is no restriction on my Chinese partner going, but they say maybe I will be able to get in later this year.  Probably due to the recent contributions to their general paranoia by the 'invasion' of a few nuts with sacks of bibles on their backs, and the recent 'poking them with a stick' by running naval excercises up and down their coastal boundaries.
