Try the suggest links button to generate more traffic.  It is on your hub page when you click on your hub to view.  Look to the left near the edit button.  Click on that then highlight a word/phrase and it will suggest other hubs you can link yours to.

lYou can also imbed links to your other hubs in your own hub.

During the edit stage click on the links capsule.  When you edit that capsule you will need the web address of another hub to copy and paste into the box.  I have several of my hubs web addresses saved on a word document for just this reason.  You should link your hubs according to relativity.

To get ideas for hub you can go hub hopping.

If you want traffic to your hubs you can visit others and leave comments on their hubs.  You can also follow people with hubs you're interested in.  They will take notice of that, but it won't guarentee that they'll follow you.

      Hope this helps.

        This is all bad advice.

The "suggest links" tool must be used very sparingly. Think about it - when you link to someone else's Hub, you're just inviting the reader to click on that link and abandon YOUR Hub.  Why would you want them to do that?

The tool is there to use when you really, really need to give the reader an explanation or some further information that you don't have.  If you find yourself using it more than once or twice in a Hub, you're doing something wrong.

As for visiting others and leaving comments - yes, that will help you get to know the community.  But most of your traffic will ultimately come via search engines.

Seems maybe you are confusing inbound links with outbound links. Suggested links are all outbound, and do not involve any kind of link exchange or reciprocal linking. So, like Marisa Wright has pointed out, these types of links may divert traffic away from your hubs. Use textual links, links capsules, and the Groups feature to link to your own related hubs instead.

I put linking to your own hubs in there too.

Welcome to HubPages, smile a wonderful site, people and team behind us wink ok, let's see. There are many Hubs written by our fellow authors - use search at top right corner. There's a learning centre. Look to the very bottom of this window at the grey bar, big_smile lol. Saves people having to write long explanations. smile

The library of congress has little on HubPages when it comes to information. smile

Read hubs.  Read forums. Read the learning center.  Read, read, and read some more.

At least half of my first 6 months on HP was spent researching how to write, how to get traffic, how to use HP capsules and features, how to use keywords.

Participate in the forums.  If you can't find an answer, or don't understand what you do find (par for the course for me) then ask!  You will find hubbers a friendly group, always willing to help a noob.

Butterflystar, welcome. You're just beginning to learn the reality of making money online from your writing - it's about 10% writing, and 90% learning, researching and marketing.

Indeed, the FAQs mention inserting the URL tracker without giving any directions.

...and no one has bothered to give you those directions. Look at Darkside's profile - he has several links on there that explain trackers in detail - from how they work, what % of impressions you get and exactly how to set them up.

OR you can just click the "share" link at the bottom of any hub then click on "link" and it will give you a link with the tracker automatically inserted.

If you write good quality material about what you know you should do fine. Remember we are a community which you are now a part of.
What I did when I first started here was read hubs written by others. Look for quality, when you find it look at the way those hubs are put together and make yours similar but unique.
If you write about what you know and love you can't go wrong. Even if you never make a dime it's still worthwhile giving of yourself to others.
If you find there is something you need and can't find the answer to, ask. Chances are someone has been in the same situation and can help you through it.
"If you surround yourself with intelligent people you are in better shape than the man who sticks his head in the sand". roughly translated from my Grandmothers sayings. The writers here are intelligent and diversified, it doesn't get any better than that.

Sorry forgot something very important. When they have the contests check out what they are asking hubs to be written about. They do research which lets them know what people are searching for. These results are what people are asked to hub about in the contests.

When there is a contest, a link will appear on top of your screen, above the search box.

Some things I have found useful is webpronews, webmasterforum and seoMOZ because they keep publishers informed on what changes are going on in web search that writers need to know about.

Because most of the information on hubpages was written before all the panda updates happened.

But if I was you I would focus first on writing quality, indept, long articles with graphs and reports then become social on places like Facebook and twitter because that seems to be what Google wants now.

Oh yeah and don't forget to start your own websites and try to build them out into supersites that way you can earn 100% of any revenue that comes in.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the ride because it is going to be a bumpy one.

I'm new too and I was wondering if PayPal is the only way to get money because I was hoping to get Amazon credits instead. Can anyone help?

You can sign up with Amazon Affiliates - they pay you direct via gift cards, cheque or direct deposit.
You can sign up with Adsense - they pay you direct via direct deposit or cheque.

You can sign up for HP Ads which pay you via Paypal.

All three are completely unrelated, other than the fact that you can show all three on  your hubs.

Hubpages is a like a mini version of google it.  The differences being that you have your research turning up hubs coming from everyday ordinary people writing articles on topics they feel they know or have something to say about it.
I have been here for going on two years, and I still do not understand a lot of what you are worried about.  If you are into this to make money, just make sure that you affiliate with google  and amazon correctly, and I would not worry about the tracking codes.  I still dont understand what they are for.  As for the impressions, you dont need to understand any of that yet, but you do need to get to writing, because unless you have a lot of hubs, you wont make much if any money.  What I would read up on and understand is the keywords.  This is what brings you traffic to your hubs.  Keywords is what gets your hubs on the first and second pages of the google directory where people are going to see it right away and click on it bringing you readers.
Make sure your hubs are original, and topics fresh, the writing good and understandable, and the rest will follow.

      Referral trackers let you:

-Get 10% of impressions on all hubber's hubs you refer for the life of their hubs.
-Give  you 9-12% impressions on ANY advert on Hubpages once a visitor clicks that link, for two hours. So if every Hubpages link (even those between your hubs) has your referral tracker imbedded, you can be earning from any visitor who clicks your link then leaves and then comes back and views a DIFFERENT author's work.

IMPRESSIONS are when your adverts are shown. VIEWS are every single visit to your hubs (includin your own.) Since Hubpages takes a 40% share, your impressions should stand at approx 60% of your views.

Plus you can also get more ad impressions from using your trackers.
